On the PS3, the SPE's or the 6 programable helper cores, are extremely fast and designed especially for fast floating point calculations. 3d processing, AI and physics all require intense floating point calculations. The cell processor it self is actually a very powerful graphics rendering processing unit, if you goto gamespot.com you can look at videos of just the cell processor it self soft-rendering unbelievably looking next generation graphics demos without the help of the Nvidia videocard. In the final product the Cell and the GPU will work together. So despite that the Xbox GPU and the PS3 GPUs are relatively evenly matched, the Cell processor has such a huge advantage over the xbox CPU in terms of FLOPS and parallele processing. (which is another thing that 3d graphics needs).
In the end you can expect higher poly count in the 3d models, more detailed textures, more things going-on on screen at the same time, more complicated AI and physics. But as I said before, the price of PS3 is a mystery right now, its definetly way more powerful than the xbox360, its possible it will cost a lot more.
A video game thread...how can I resist? :-) The hard part is not breaking any NDAs. I'm doing dual development between the 360 and PC right now and our high-end PCs run a whole hell of a lot better. The problem is that video games don't lend themselves to multiple processors. So as big a pain as the switch to the three for Xbox was, the PS3 will be even worse. And at least the 360 is using an environment we're familiar with (Windows). I think the 2nd and 3rd generation games will show some huge improvements, as we all figure this crap out.
As for which is more powerful, the rumors spreading around the industry are that they'll be pretty comparable. The thing to be concerned about is games, as I don't know a single person working on a PS3 title right now (and I only know one person that's even seen the dev kit). Not saying that there aren't a bunch of titles in development, just a whole lot less than for the 360.

They mention that Xbox360's GPU has a more flexible pipeline system, but fail to mention that the PS3 GPU is clocked faster. And there are disadvantages in having an unified pipeline architecture too.
As for memory the PS3 uses XDR ram, which is many times faster than the DDR ram used on the Xbox360.
So yeah there are stuff that Xbox360 does better than PS3, but in the end it all comes down to FLOPS, which is what matter in 3d graphics. And Xbox360 is clearly inferior. heres are the official specs

Im not really a sony fan or MS fan or anything, in the end its the games that matters. A talented software developer will make good games no matter what system its on. which ever system can get the best games will be the better system. Im gonna wait for both systems to come out before buying one.

yeah accounting for multi-threaded parelle processing makes tihngs really hard and complicated, but its the future, as even PCs are moving toward more cores. We'll all have to get used to it.

When the Xbox team speaks of general processing, what does this cover? I noticed youused the comparison that the PS3 wouldnt run something like office as well as the 360, but im just trying to get a better feel of what, in games, general processing would be needed for and how this would in any way give an advantage.

general purpose processing is a vague *** term. IMO it can be refered to anything, such as processing linear algebra and database queries... In our 3d video games, the polygon models are stored mathematically in matrixis, the complex characters and level that you see on screen when rendered in real time is basically a result of intense number crunching in floating point operations. Theres general processing going on in games, but these types of operations usually dont require nearly as much processing power as displaying 3d graphics. The xbox360 cpu is much closer to a conventional multi-core PC architecture. The 7 SPEs on the cell processor specializes in floating point processing, thats what makes the cell processor a 3d processing powerhouse. The cell also has a 3.6GHZ power pc core that can handle all the general purpose processing. I personally see the cell as a vastly superior CPU for video games/movie streaming/graphics processing based on the stats. The ps3 seems much trickier to program for though
