Angry Property Taxes...2005

So I get home from work to relax and I see a bill sitting on my desk. I assume its the old monthly bill from Infiniti financial which I have setup to auto withdrawal for my monthly payments. Taking a second look, this envelope is thicker and a little different. After cracking it open I see its my property tax 'bill' so to speak. Now I do a pause before looking at my 'damages'. I bought the car July 23rd 2004 brand new, and paid around $550 in property taxes in 2004 for the remainder of that year (July 23-Dec 31 2004=$550). So I wanted to have a good estimate of what 2005 would be before actually looking at my bill.....

Well people...my 2005 property taxes is $1387.77. Yes thats right, Im paying the state of VA just under $1400 to own the G. For most thats a months rent/mortgage etc...and for me?? Its to 'own' a G35 coupe....

Im a bit more than surprised...im kinda pissed to be honest!! Assessed value of the car is $29,820..my ***, to bad the dealer wouldnt give me more than $26,000 and resell at that $29k price!!

Post your tax amounts here if you like, and your 'assessed' value, I'd like to meet the person who 'assessses' the values so I can assess the likelihood that Id knock his/her a$$ out!!

just got my g35 less than a month ago and dreading that big bill already.

i believe the tax relief only helps for the first $20000 of the vehicle's value.

Exactly. Thats why Im hesitant about selling my house and moving to VA to be closer to work. Tho to be honest, the tax bill vs the gas Im paying, Tax bill looks alot better.

I agree w/ Norm - Puria, looks like you're getting hit with the whole tax amount and not getting a tax relief credit... Are you sure you: a) read the bill correctly, and b) did not indicate to anyone that the car was for business use?

MD pays more in property taxes for houses and gas prices are higher. It all works out. Actually it is still less to live in VA if you are a home owner.

^^ are you sure about md pays more in property tax? I live in fairfax county and I'm sure property tax is killer. My car tax was a lot as well. Property tax is a biotch.

I bought my car in June of 04 and mine is 400.05 for the year with the car tax relief and 1100 if I was not having the relief. Something is definately wrong with your bill Puria.

If you buy a 300k house in MD and a 300k house in VA your house payments will be in MD more because MD taxes at a higher rate. When moving to this area the house payment difference was almost 200 higher in MD. If you only rent and don't own a home in MD then it is cheaper to live there.

Fairfax county is one of the expensive places to live in VA as far as taxes go. Part of the reason I like Prince William.

Puria,

That still seems a bit high. Would give the county a call and see whats going on with that. There should be a line that shows you how much tax relief you are getting like Baback said. Hopefully that line is in there.
