I've been looking around and want to grab a set of smaller lighter wheels to put drag tires on for the track. My buddy has a set of S2000 AP1 rear wheels but I think their 16's and can only assume they wouldn't fit. What do you guys normally run to fit over the rear Sport brakes?

 

My guess is probably 17". My best advice is to go to your buddys and try them on! I know 18" is the bare minimum for the fronts and the rears aren't too much smaller.

 

17s might even be pushing it since those rear rotors are only 5mm smaller in diameter. Not much room at the barrels on 18s FWIW.

 

I was thinking maybe since the caliper in the rear is also a bit smaller, that might help. All a guess though!

 

Well I was right, he has the S2000 AP1 16's so I doubt it'll work over the Sport calipers but I'll try tonight and snap a picture anyway. If they don't, I'm going to grab some RPF1's and mount some Nitto NT05R's. I ultimately think RPF1's will be my final choice but just for anyone searching or referencing this later I'll answer the question anyway.

 

Here's the official unofficial caliper to wheel measurements haha, no go for 16's. It was very VERY close, like within the width of a business card close. The inside barrel of the wheel was hitting the lip on the outside edge of the caliper. If the caliper was sanded down just a bit it would slide right on, but I'm not that brave. So, that being said, a 17" is the smallest wheel you can fit over the rear Sport brakes without modding anything.

 

Look for MB Wheel "Weapon ." It is about 17.5 IBs each (17x7.0)and very durable. I have these rims since 2008.... I believe discounttires or ebay carry them.

It is also very cheap and yet very durable. It is an A-tech brand in Japan. There is an A-tech stamp on these rims from Ebay or Discount tire. It comes in 2 colors, gunmetal and bronze.

Here is my Q40 AWd (I prefer 17") quicker off the line. I prefer this than cool looking 19" rims that are heavy.

So for sure you can run a 17" wheel on the rear. Not a G37S but this is a 370Z with the Akebono brakes so same thing.

I do not have any clearance photos, but it was pretty damn close to the calipers.

 

I'm not into drag racing but I love it when people look for the right tools to perform a task.

Are you doing the small wheels for gearing, weight, or sidewall?

 

This is for a clients/friends car. This one is a rod/piston motor with a tt kit on it. Made 550whp @10-11 psi and 650whp @14 psi. Will be coming back for more mods and then boost will be turned up.

He actually drives on this setup everywhere now. Main reason for the 17 is weight and more tire options. Weld RTS and Mickey Thompson ET Street II.

 

Yeah my main reason for smaller wheels are drag tire options, not to mention the difference in price from 19" to 17". Thanks for the replies guys.

 

Thanks but I would only run smaller wheels on the rear for drag tire reasons, measuring the front is pointless and kinda obvious, sport fronts are massive. Those non - sport brakes appear to be a bit more roomy. I bet you could mate a 16 in the rear on the non-sports, the calipers appear smaller.

 

You can actually fit a 15" rim on the 350Z oem brakes. Have a friend up here running it on his 370Z. He did have to make some custom arms to get the clearance though.

 

In the future for me, I'm going with rpf1 18x10.5 with MT street or nitto nt01
