No disrespect but, if you have a cheap head, buy a cheap helmet!

BTW - check out HOD (HookedOnDriving.com) - the have an event at New Jersey Motorsports Park Thunderbolt on 7/25. HOD is a great outfit and NJMP is an awesome venue. Contack Joe Mills @ 215.310.5474 or check it out online for more details.

I'd consider 500-700 "mid range", and pretty solid in terms of protection.

Remember to try on the helmet before committing if at all possible, and make sure it has a SA05 or SA10 rating.

Also, when you start getting into the 800+ helmets, they start to get significantly lighter, which means your neck will have less strain until you build up the muscles to handle the lateral Gs.

Mine cost about 550, and I don't see any need to upgrade in the near future, although I did get into an accident at the track this last Saturday, and can see the benefits of a lighter helmet. However, a neck restraint would have been superior to any lighter helmet. A neck restraint just went to the top of my list of things to buy.

I use a Simpson, but any of the big brands work.

Simpson's sponsorship of Top Gear may have had an influence on my decision

Safety Solutions - Racing Seatbelts| Safety Restraint | Auto Harness - R3

That's the restraint I'm purchasing.
