First time at the track!

Well I finally got to do it. Took the G to the drag strip. Biggest take away, I need to learn a lot more about my car! Best time out of 5 runs was a 14.335 in the 1/4. I should have run a few more times but wife was ready to roll and escape the scene.

I had a problem with launching. First run was with VDC on and ran a 14.378. Took that off for the rest and had a TON of spin in first and a bit in 2nd. Last run was the best and took some pressure out of the tires, from 35lbs to 25 and launched at about 3k rpms. Okay someone, teach me! I would like to belive I'm a pretty good driver but I think I'm missing something. I know this may not be the worst of times that folks have run but I thought for sure I would break into the high 13's with my 6MT.

Anyways, I got a good baseline and can now start "playing" and modding. Looking forward to doing so and then not only going to find out the progress but then getting on the road course where I can let this awesome machine be her.

Oh, I'm fairly new here and have done a lot of searching. This site is awesome! I have had my car since January and waited to get her. Went from an 05 Altima to the 08 6MT...slight improvement in performance. haha I actually met another member at the track last night but don't see him on here. Hutson 112??? or something like that and was from BC. Cool guy and good luck.

The ET is all in the launch, get that 60' down solid and you'll pull nice times if you don't miss any shifts. Part of the traction problem can be solved with lowering air pressure down, 25 isn't bad, but you might be able to go lower before you start hurting your trap speed.

BTW, what did you run in the 1/8th? What was your trap speed in the 1/4? 60' time?

Yea, that was a very sweet 40th edition 370. We both had bad starts...not sure what his time was but I was on his bumper and that was my worst run of the night. He also had a mt. Crazy thing is, he just bought the car that day! Dude...break it in a little. Love that car but I needed a back seat.

60' = 2.281
1/8 = 9.379
MPH = 99.41

you need to work on the 60ft. Always leave VDC off, go from lower rpm (2500?) till you get comfortable modulating the throttle and clutch. Are you taking it to max rpm before you are shifting? I would also suggest not lowering the air pressure. The more variables you add the harder it is going to be to ever adjust.

I grabbed a time slip from early on in my 350Z before I started modding and looked up a comparable slip.

60' 2.297
1/8 = 9.278
MPH 98.341
1/4 = 14.154

Slip was from a run in May of 06, which might be helpful seeing as you aren't too far away I would assume we might be somewhat close in altitude and temp. By the slip I would have started slower and pulled you by a tenth by the time we hit the 1/8th.

It's your first time there so you just need time to adjust, but it's all in the first 60. Don't worry about the lights when you start just work on launching.

The higher the RPM you launch the more you are going to have to modulate the clutch and throttle and slip the clutch to keep from spinning. Start from 2000 or 2500 and slip from there as it becomes more manageable and your 60 ft times improve increase your rpms on launch, aside from that work on the speed on your shifts and there isn't any reason for you to break 13's stock.

I'm by no means a pro the fastest time I ever pulled in my 350 was still in the upper 13's but we aren't exactly east coast elevation or weather so our times are naturally going to be worse. The tips helped me and hopefully they will help you, good luck!

Awesome oro, thanks! Yea, it will take a little time I guess. I did get .3 better by my last run so I guess I was learning. Also, I was slipping into 4th at the last second (i mean last). Was nervous about going over 7500, didn't want her to get mad at me. Houston Raceway Park is known for being one of the fastest tracks but not on a day when it rained almost all day then the sun comes out just long enough to dry the track. Air was so bad there was a sticky film all over the car.

Thanks again!

Yeah the weather put you at a disadvantage on that one. .3 Is definitely a good difference. I remember when I first went with my Z and was bent out of a shape that my runs were all 14.3-14.5 then I saw another guy in a Z in the mid 15's and a guy in a G35 in the low 16's. Then I felt better.

We all think we aren't too bad till we have to eat some humble pie, but after you get some time under your belt those humbling moments are just steps to you getting better.
