Help Removing Stock Exhaust System
Removing Stock Exhaust System
So, my brother is trying to remove the stock exhaust system to replace it with the new MXP I have but is having issues.
I have no idea what the hell is going on because I am on a deployment... But this is what he told me:
" Its the y pipe that hooks up to the cat. Two bolt on each side for total off four. The two on the inside. When I try to knock it out. The cat is in the way. So I don't know what I'm gonna do. If i get it out, then how am going put the new one in. Because they are longer"
"You see the two cat, the two inside flanges bolts, that ones won't come out. The cat that on the passenger side you can see the bolt and the weld heat shield.I don't see it anywhere on the post about the bolts just mention nuts. Every installation I read doesn't mention on how to remove the bolt out of the cat. Just say to reuse the nut and gasket"
"On the inside of the flange ( the ones closest to that black square thing. Can't pull the bolt to the rear to remove it, has a head on the bolt. Only way to remove it is to pull it toward the front of the car and you see that weld heat shield. Its block the way of the bolt to pull it out. If I cut he heat shield off. I still don't think there is enough room to pull it out."
I am clueless to what he is talking about because I have never removed it myself.
Anyone care to chime in? I have searched everywhere on this forum and no one else seems to have this problem, besides having one hell of a time loosening the nuts.

I dont know what youre trying to replace. When I had my cats switched to stillen HFC this summer I had a shop do it and they had to soak the nuts with lubricant and then use an air socket to knock them loose. They ended up breaking a couple and that was ok because I ordered replacement ones from the dealer, it was less than $50 for new bolts and nuts and gaskets. Im not sure if this is what youre talking about but let me know. I also just put headers on last week, biggest mistake Ive made. I only picked up 8 cuz i already have a full exhaust but it cost me 530 parts 500 install 200 for an o2 sensor and another 100 to install that and dyno it again. And if I had known g37's have stock headers I wouldnt have messed with it
I don't think that is the problem... he said he is having difficulty moving a bolt that is hitting the heat shield that is somewhere near the Y pipe.

Use this as a guide, might help:

The bolts for the cats stay. They are welded into the cats themselves and you only have to remove the nut on the rear side of the cat/y pipe joint. Then you simply slide the y pipe rearward until it clears the bolt. See pic for what it looks like with the y pipe removed, cat bolts are still there. And they are a pita to remove, I cracked a socket when removing the nuts.
