laughable amount back for recycling stock exhaust

Just thought I would share a funny story about recycling the stock exhaust off of my '13 G37. I asked around here on the forum to see if anyone bought/sold the used stock exhaust. I was told they were worth nothing and someone suggested recycling it for at least some amount over $.00.

I called the local auto salvage/recycling center and they said that they paid something like $0.43/lb. for stainless steel exhausts. So I packed everything up in a work van and drove it down to the recycling center. When I got there the guy tried to tell me that it was not stainless steel because he could stick a magnet to it. I asked him then why in almost 3years there was no rust on the exhaust. He quickly changed his story to thinking that only high quality stainless steel would not stick to a magnet. They then paid me $.03/lb. or $1.64 as regular steel!?!

So when I got home to the G I put a magnet on my brand new Stillen exhaust and it stuck right too it. What a load of crap! Had I know they were going to pay less than $2, I would have just thrown it in the dumpster.

It's carbon steel or aluminized steel, not 304, 314, or 316 stainless based on the results of the magnet test. I'm surprised you took the $1.64, I would have held onto it for that price in the event of a future part out.

From: Framingham Ma,
for a 1.64$ i would have tossed it back in the van and drove home. Someone at some point will buy it on here, if it was a sedan i might have done it if i part out my car :/

Yeah, I've pretty much regretted every OEM part I've sold.
Sucks about that deal, can't even get cheese on your burger for that

I got my stock one too. Probably put it on the car when this SS exhaust rots.

Yeah I thought about keeping the exhaust, but then I remembered every other car I have done that with and the eyesore it was sitting in the garage forever as I tried to sell it for more than it cost to ship it and thought, "eh, f*ck it!"
