Hey guys, I am considering changing my G37s stock air filters for a cold air intake setup.

I am not so much looking for increase in power as I am for pure aesthetics and enhanced sound from the engine. And of course, I would like to save as much money as possible.

What intakes would you guys recommend? I have found this one, but it is so cheap that it makes me wonder:

While I am interested in saving money, I am not interested in wasting money on something that's worthless

I am also interested in switching the exhaust system. Eventually I want to switch everything, including the headers, but for now I'd like to switch the piping from front to back and the exhaust itself, or just the exhaust.

One of the reasons being that my exhaust is vibrating a lot while in idle, I got under the car and it doesn't seem like anything is loose (headshield, for example), so I think it's inside the exhaust itself that something is loose in there.

I like the factory sound, so if there is a way to repair that without having to replace, that'd be great too.

I have made a couple of changes to the car, albeit very small and not really noteworthy. Mostly cosmetic stuff.

This is a 2008 G37 Sport that I just finished paying off two months ago, so now that I no longer have the hefty monthly payment I can start doing things to it little by little.

Recent changes:

Tinted Windows
LED Interior lights (all, vanity, courtesy, map lights)
LED license plate lights
Plasti-Dipped stock rims (matter black, glossifier). This was my first time plasti dipping anything!
(not shown in pictures) Polished the aluminum of the door pull handles inside the car (they were scratched and dirty). Looks like new now!

I have quite a few other small cosmetic changes to make

 

For cold air intakes, in regards to good quality and industry standard you have 3 options: Stillen Gen 3, Takeda Stage-2 and R2C (short ram).

Stillen G3 seems to be the consensus for highest quality/HP increase, but is also the highest priced. It also requires the hardest installation as you have to custom fit it and do some cutting internally to your G for it to fit.

You could save some good money and go with the Takeda, get almost the same result and easier installation. It also wraps around the front so the pipes and filter can be seen beneath your grille, pretty neat. However it only uses 1 (bigger) filter versus the usual dual filter (so technically not a "dual air intake" lol). Some people see this as a con, I personally don't feel it makes a difference. Its unique and looks awesome.

Then you have R2C intake, which is actually a short ram intake. This is a deciding factor for some. It is however the easiest install out of all 3, looks great too if you want a nice engine bay as the piping and filters are both visible.

I am still deciding between the Takeda and R2C. My opinion, don't spend the extra $$$ on the Stillen. Most of the HP increase comes at high RPM's anyway (7,000rpm+).

 

If you are looking for intakes on the less expensive end... and without running the risk of throwing away money on parts of questionable quality, I recommend the R2C intakes (bought mine with black powder-coated tubes and black filters for ~ $500 total).



And as far as exhaust goes, hopefully you can determine where the vibration is coming from... but if you decide to start on a budget with an axle back muffler/tips set-up, I highly recommend the Tanabe Medallion for the looks and improved sound quality over stock. (This was a relatively inexpensive first step in exhaust mod's costing ~ $750.)

I have the R2C intakes in Black Chrome and Tanabe Medallion axle back. Sounds amazing. Next upgrade will be RHFC's and a tune.

I don't really race this car or anything of that sort (ahem! except when the ocassional fart cannon needs to be taught a lesson at a red light), so as I said, aesthetics and sound over actual performance (although it wouldn't hurt, either).

I will look into all these, I am looking to get this done in the very near future (not right now, but within a month, at least for the intakes).

As for the vibration... I have gotten under the car and well, I have noticed that if I hit the exhaust tips, it vibrates somewhere inside. Which is what leads me to think it's the exhaust itself that's vibrating. Everything else seems to be snug.

When inside the car, it's pretty hard to determine where its coming from, although it does sound more pronounced towards the back than the front.

 

Could possibly have your cats breaking apart. Happened to me on a different car. I went to make a u-turn and got on it.. car hesitated and was dying then all of a sudden BOOOOOMMMMM. Shot a huge ball of cat filler out the back along with smoke and took off. Small pieces fell out for the next month or so and would make a rattling noise.

 

As mentioned by Cr0tchf4i and brianf23 above, the price has dropped significantly on the R2C's since I purchased mine.

Frankly, for your goals of aesthetics and sound improvements these intakes are a steal! Very pleased with my current set-up and the fitment/install was seamless, even down to the color-matching hardware.
