Newbie question on intakes

I've had my 2012 G37x for a few days and I noticed it has two engine air filters. Is there a specific purpose for this? Space reasons, performance?? Is this a ram air system?

Excuse my ignorance. My 2005 TL only had one air filter....

Thanks!

Ram air? Wat? No.

There are two throttle bodies. It's probably not efficient to source air to both through a single filter. Certainly the layout for that kind of configuration would be a challenge.

Really embracing that "newbie" label, aren't you?

Very, very newbie!

It's the first vehicle I've owned that required two air filters. Just curious about the reasons/benefits on why it has two.

The dual-path intake (two air cleaners, throttle bodies, etc.) was introduced with the VQ35HR and is said to lower intake tract restriction by 18 percent.

In addition, I think they introduced new equal-length exhaust manifolds that lead into mufflers that are 25 percent more free-flowing at the same time.

That's why it's tough to improve on the HR design with bolt-on mods.

The internals of the VQ37HR claim to support up to 1000hp without modification.

Tell the Bimmer Fanbois to put that into their 3 liter pipe and smoke it :-)

...and double the cost of TB repairs and MAF sensor replacement. Not that I'm complaining... the dual-intake design is sexy.

Truth be told, the TBs and MAFs will probably last most car lifetimes.

Excellent. Thanks for the info. Does this also have something to do with the throaty sound of the exhaust?

No that would be the exhaust The VQ engine just has a very distinct sound.

Had my TB replaced at 23k miles.

I think I read somewhere that the stock HR intake tube does add ram air effect at freeway speed which equates to about 3hp, at least for VQ35HR

By that reasoning, all cars that have an air inlet just under the hood is Ram Air... which would be just about every car. Hmm, OK then.

Whenever I see the phrase "Ram Air", my mind wanders over here:

That sucks, Sniper. Both of them? Lucky for you it was within warranty.

So did my previous 06 G35 and changing the two air filters on my current 2012 not only is quicker but requires no tools to do so.
It is also easier to look at the filters after around 8k miles to determine when to change them. Only takes one minute.

They are a very well designed setup for simple servicing and efficiency, like socketz67 said, quite hard to improve on this setup. Most aftermarket intakes will gain a bit at higher RPMs but lose a little down low so net gains are pretty minimal. The real reason most get intakes (myself included) is for looks and that addicting sound at WOT.
