i wanna put a k&n intake in my g37x sedan and it says that it supposivly gives 15-17 horsepower..i find that hard to believe what do you guys actually think it will really give me cuz i know its not giving me 15-17 lol

 

somewhere between -.15 and .17.

Stillen Gen3 may give you about 10 but the G37 is pretty much optimized from the factory. Intake/exhaust is more sound & looks than performance.

Just get the drop in K&N filters.

 

I say spend some money and do a before and after dyno on it. Then only then will you know the truth.

 

The Gen2 almost has more appeal, simply because any monkey can install it, and the filters are always easily accessible for change. Plus, unlike other similar kits, the filters are mostly enclosed, with cold-air access from the OEM intake ports.

And it's $100 less.

 

There's a big comprehensive thread on intakes and their net hp gains somewhere on this site or maybe g35driver, not much to be gained from the intakes, some even lose hp over the oem setup. Rks made a good point, these VQ motors are pretty maxed-out from the factory, takes some serious money to really get any noticeable gains from these motors. Not necessarily a bad thing, nice to know you've got a hot setup right out of the box.

Rochester, I'm liking those Gen2s also, maybe if my wife has any holiday cheer left after my wheels/tires arrive I could add it to the list. (sorta doubt it )

 

Based on what could mostly be described as anecdotal research, I have to agree with that. At this point, I'm thinking Intake, HFC, CBE and an UpRev Tune would net you somewhere north of 20 HP. Which isn't that big of a deal for what could amount to $3K+ of parts and service.

One of the things I don't like about them is in the installation instructions. They talk about relocating one of the little black relay boxes, but instruct you to do it with "velcro". Seriously? Velcro? Although I'm sure I could figure out something a little more sturdy.

Another are the pop-chargers themselves. I'm more partial to the design of APEX-i filters... which I'm sure I could upgrade to when it comes time to replace them.

And then there's the cost. That's an awful lot of money for a pair of shiny aluminum tubes, and a couple of polyurethane heat shields. Particularly when the gains are mostly between your ears and interpreted by the butt dyno. I mean, the profit margins at Stillen are absolutely outrageous. Always have been.

 

ive got the Gen3. its the only intake thats actually going to give you results. i had the K&N. intake before that. it made it sound like my engine was going to blow up when i floored it.

 

did the k&n intake atleast sound good?

I just swapped out my Gen 2's that ive had for 4 years for a Gen 3. Noticeable improvement throughout the entire rpm band with the Gen 3's. Mid range torque i hadnt realized I lost, i now have back...if not a little bit more. Top end is a def improvement over gen 2's. Still havent got the car tuned yet, but I know it will only get better from there.

 

Stillen 3rd Gen CAI is a true CAI in my opinion and sounds more agressive than the other aftermarket ones. As for power it's not bad you just need to do an UpRev tune and than you will get your 15-17HP I suggest you get exhaust and hfc to get more power and then tune the car, after that the result will put a smile on your face definetly will feel the difference, not only in the sound...

K&N will not give you HP, it's only a short ram, not CAI

 

There are two members on 370z that both dynod separately and happen to both get 6whp and 8wtq gains and another member with 10whp gains. Of course KN also lists their dyno with 14whp gains (which may not be very repeatable). Either way when it comes to intakes, KN has their own huge facility with dyno for intake fabrication and testing so while they may not give big gains, they probably know their stuff. If you compare their system with other short rams you can see they correctly retain the OEM maf circumference and then break out into a larger pipe after that (different from the G2 Stillen that remains the smaller size piping). They also seem to use a thicker coating on the pipes to reduce heat transfer. For 300 bucks, it seems worthwhile. My .02
