You know, I should probably retract what I said earlier. Because if you run without the air filter connected correctly you may have drained all your blinker fluid. Good idea to get that checked out.

ok I know everyone here, thinks this is a bad idea, but those in the off-roading world do something very close to this, its called a "Deckplate mod"
all or most of the people I know ad a screen over the whole to prevent any bigger items into the airbox, but this mod, has been done for years, and I have not, heard of one single problem from this, on any of the 4x4/off-road forums Im on.
To be honest, I dont think think it adds any performance gains, it will decrease your gas milesge, cause you are flooring the gas just to hear the throaty sound lol

Most of us in the offroad community think this is a dumb mod as well. At least the folks I know, but maybe it's becuase we are older? lol

if you leave it unclipped, a lot of particles will get in, it wont affect you right away but gunk will build up and you will be screwed of an engine in the future. dont do it. i hope your friend isnt doing this on his 40k car
