That's the dumbest idea I've seen in a long time. In addition to the crud you could be sucking in you are now sucking in air from under the hood compartment. I can guarantee you it is a lot hotter than the air available to the air filter boxes in front of the radiator area. Have you heard about cold-air intake system.....??

Yeah...if you in fact did that monstrosity to your engine, I'd go in there right away and take the intakes off and clean them well. While you're there clean your TBs as well. I hope you didn't inflict serious damage to your engine...

It's not a good idea, but over sensationalizing it isn't helpful. Your engine is fine, just put the filter back on and maybe change your oil if you left it that way for a long time. The oil filter should get rid of most particulates so it's not a must-do.

ok I know everyone here, thinks this is a bad idea, but those in the off-roading world do something very close to this, its called a "Deckplate mod"
all or most of the people I know ad a screen over the whole to prevent any bigger items into the airbox, but this mod, has been done for years, and I have not, heard of one single problem from this, on any of the 4x4/off-road forums Im on.
To be honest, I dont think think it adds any performance gains, it will decrease your gas milesge, cause you are flooring the gas just to hear the throaty sound lol

OP, definitely a no-no. I would think you would know better owning a $40k car! Do it right and get intakes please.

Are you really comparing modding a G37 to modding an off road racing vehicle? Really??? I guarantee it's not the same thing...and at least in the example you used they at least covered the opening with a screen. And I do quote from one of the articles you linked in your reply: "However, it is very unwise to offroad without an airfilter."

You're right it's not the same thing. Offroad driving introduces more particulates into the engine.

Again, the OP's engine is probably just fine, but he should reattach the filters for the long term.

the reason people do the Deckplate mod is that some think they get a little extra HP, and the sound....
You put in bold "However, it is very unwise to offroad without an airfilter." where did I or the OP, mention about driving without a filter????

and it is somewhat the same thing, atleast from what the OP posted, he just wanted to get more air, into the intake, and thats exactly, what the Deckplate mod does.

Haha. That's called a Ghetto Air Box the maxima guys have been doing that for yeaaaarrssss. You won't really have any issues but then your just sucking in hot air from the engine bay so you might actually lose power.

yeppers, Ive tried telling guys that exact thing, "you will just suck in hot air" but many many do it anyways the only advantage is that later if you dont like it, all you have to do is screw the lid on, and its airtight.

Oh man! I'm selling my brand new Stillen intakes and getting me a pair of these! Actually, I'll buy a bunch and daisy-chain them and use them instead of the intake hose... I'll end up with at least 50HP gains PER SIDE!!
