You can usually hear them best by stepping on it or a quick throttle burst around mid RPM like you noted. Heat is normal.. consider you were driving slow right up to when you parked it so there's not much air getting in to cool them down. The temp ramp up is noticably slower then time to get cool.

Yup, bingo!

noob, when you say the filters were hot, are you talking about the filters themselves, or the tubes?

At speed, there's enough air going through, and the temps won't have much of an effect at all.

These engines run hot. That's just how it is.
