Definitely a weird looking set up, but I honestly don't hear the huge difference in sound. Sure, in the parked position it sounds a little exotic but I have a feeling that's more due to the resonance of the "garage" that they are parked in. In the video below the car sounds like any other loud exhaust kit.. maybe a touch different but that's it.

I actually like the way that thing sounds, looks way too restrictive though

Sam, it is not restrictive. The mufflers on the system are very insignificant. The sound is controlled mainly by the resonator pipes [ the 1.5 inch pipes in the middle] The reason they are plugged up is because they needed to create a contradicting standing waves to the flowing gas sound. Those blinded pipes contain the gas that resonates at a certain frequency thus " killing" the same frequency in the flowing exhaust. For example: If one of those blinded pipes is 1 meter long and we assume the speed of sound in gas is 330m/s the frequency this is going to contradict is 165hz. As you can see it is a fairly low frequency therefore the higher pitch exhaust will be achieved.
Frequency= 330m/s[ speed of sound in air] divided by 2 times the LENGTH of the tube [ standing pipe, blinded pipe]
It is easy to kill the frequency you don't like by adjusting the length of the resonator pipe. Don't cheat yourself, anything below 70hz is insignificant because we will not hear it very well. So we should concentrate on the audible frequencies which start above 100hz. There aren't many choices because we are limited by the length of the resonating pipe from both ends- it can't be to long because it will kill the lowest frequencies we do not hear. It can't be to short cause the air has to get a chance to vibrate.
Anyway for those of you who wondered why these blinded pipes, here you are.

I understand the concept of a Helmholtz resonator and how it works to negate frequencies

All I'm saying is, flow and performance wise, it's quite restrictive

By using the Helmholtz resonators[ the skinny pipes] they've managed to give this exhaust a very defined note sort of a center pitch which is very apparent in high rpm range. Listen to it ,it almost plays a clear tone.
