X pipe is better than Y, but is it really that much?

Been mulling over my exhaust options and I know the two big bottlenecks are the factory cats and the y-pipe (1.75" !), but that when people replace just the axle-back they see no real gains.

So, since I like the sound of my stock exhaust what if I were to get HFCs and an ED or Ichiba Y-pipe and just keep the stock muffler, is an exhaust like Invidia, Borla, FI really gonna make much more power than it? I'm more concerned with good gains than changing the sound, so this would be by far the cheaper option if an aftermarket y-pipe is within a couple HP of an x-pipe.

Also, could you mate an x-pipe up to the stock muffler by fabbing some custom mid/axle-pipes? Trying to EXHAUST all my options here!!

Haha.........lame..

The most restrictive parts is by far the y-pipe, it looks like a damn pancake. However, many will agree that the mid-pipe is also equally restrictive. A lot of members have replaced their y-pipe with their stock set up. The most gains are within' the mid/y-pipe, because that's where it's most restrictive. The bad thing is, no company makes a mid-pipe for us JUST yet, so the only options are Y-pipes. I believe you can't bolt up an x-pipe to the stock mufflers because it's not a true dual (not sure about this), it could be possible with some custom welding and fabrication.

Since you're concerned with gains, you think our stock mufflers aren't restrictive too? IMO go with a full catback or save your money and buy an HFC, will sound good and nice gains.. No point in re inventing the bicycle with the custom TJH R&D IMO

Exhausting your thoughts you said eh...haha

Although I haven't seen any dyno's when people get Tanabe's axle-backs they say they get no gain, so my thinking is the stock mullfer isn't much more restrictive than what aftermarket ones are, except it's not as shiny..
