Clock Spring Damage
Clock Spring Damage
Hi,
I am pretty sure I damaged the clock spring while turning the steering wheel to far with the rack and pinion disconnected.
if this is the case, exactly what has broken in the spring, is it something i can repair with out having to replace it?

It would be cheaper and easier to just replace the clockspring rather than try to repair it. A new clockspring will run about $125+/- while used ones on eBay run $75 and up. Make sure to match the part number exactly with your damaged clockspring.
Happened to me before when I replaced my steering wheel trim on my G a few years ago. Like the above poster said, just buy a new one. It’s practically almost impossible to fix it unless you have extremely super steady hands.
The 350z unit may physically fit but the pinouts (wiring) may be totally different. You would have to check the pinouts and connectors from the 350z unit and see if it matches what your car has. I'm willing to bet they won't match.
When it comes to clocksprings there are dozens of different versions for the same car- most depends on what features (AV, Cruise, NAV, Heated Wheel, etc.) your car has.
It is best to just do a exact replacement of your existing unit (unless you're adding features like me (different topic)).
Remember, the clockspring is a vital component of the SRS airbag system. I, personally, wouldn't screw with it too much.

Update on Clockspring
Hey I damaged what I assume my clcokspring when taking off rack and pinion , vdc and slip activities when Turing sterring wheel , can I have an update on that 25$ clockspring from eBay bec I plan on purchasing, thank you
Quite possible that the car needs a steering angle reset from not placing the rack back into position. If the light can be reset and dont come on until wheel side movement it could indicate both though a damaged clock spring will probably make a noticeable noise.
It does make a noise and it sounds like the spring is moving around , the lights come on when I steer all the way to one side , so I’m sure the clock spring got damaged , and for the steering angle sensor reset , is it possible to do myself?
You can not recalibrate the SAS as a scan tool is required. Any reputable alignment shop should be able to get it set in less than 15 minutes. Dealership would be a last resort.
If you are going to replace the clock spring, many sellers on eBay will sell them paired with the SAS already attached. This would be the easier option and You might not have to get the SAS re-calibrated.
