I personally tried the pedal method for about 15 min and never got squat for results. I then took a 5 minute drive and was able to see the codes on the OBDII screen and clear them with a push of a button, but to each his own I guess. I now own my own OBDII reader so if anyone is local I will read and clear codes if you'd like.

I've got the uprev software which allows me to reset it as well. I still use the ecu reset procedure to read codes and reset ecu.

Any cheap OBD II scan tool will allow you to read codes & clear codes. They're so cheap now that everyone should have one.
