Service Engine Soon Light

Just driving to work today and all of the sudden the service engine soon light appears. My car has 42.6K miles and it had an oil change at the dealer about a month ago.
I turned off the car when I arrived at work and restarted it with the same light appearing.

Any ideas what it might be?

Could be a lot of different things. Unfortunately without really knowing exactly what happened to the car over the past couple days the only way to diagnose it is if you have an electronic code reader or take it to the dealer

^^^ you can't read the code without an OBDII reader. Most parts stores like checkers, auto zone etc.. will read the code for you and tell you what it is. If you post the code on here, I'll check it against the infiniti service manual and tell you whats wrong and what could be the cause, plus how to diagnose the fix. This way the stealership wont rip you off !

Doesn't the hidden diagnostic menu give you some error history? Or does it not show codes like this?

From my understanding, the hidden diagnostics menu pertains to all the a/v stuff in the car. It will show errors with the speakers, back up camera, ipod hookup, sat antenna, nav unit etc.. as well as run self diagnosis to make sure your a/v components are functioning properly. It will not display CEL's (check engine light) or the codes associated with them.

Alright cool. I figured that was all, but thought I'd throw it out there

There IS a way to get codes without a OBDII You just have to know what the codes mean. I've gotten all my codes this way from aall my nissans and infinitis

The check engine light will flash in a style like sos and give you the codes once you enter diagnostic mode. for example (just random number) 0375 would be 10 flashes. then a pause then 3 flashes then a pause then 7 flashes, pause then 5 pause then repeat.
https://www.myg37.com/forums/d-i-y-i...isconnect.html

After step 3 when the check engine light blinks that is when you get the code. get the code and finish the rest of the reset ecu or turn the ignition off.

The link i provided also shows how to reset the ecu to clear codes. just 2 more steps after you read the code. Also Autozone corp has sent out memos saying that they are not allowed to clear codes. Some places will still clear codes.
