Hey guys I have a 2011 g37 sport sedan and have a few concerns for my transmission. Recently my transmission started to leak and I took it to a transmission shop. The mechanic was able to see what was causing the leak and also said that while I was driving it (two hours tops) the fluid in the trans got “burnt up” and supposedly messed up my gears (even tho it was shifting completely find when I put new trans fluid in it to get to the shop). He said that he can get it rebuilt for $2000, but the upside is that he would have to replace the TCM with a brand new one, which is an additional $2000. My only questions are, is this guy just trying to get a lot of money out of me and can I just get a slightly brand new TCM for the fraction of the price ?

 

Fix the leak, put the right amount of fluid and try again. Burnt fluid might have not done much. If it did then start looking for a new/used transmission, they can be found for under $500 in good condition and you dont have to change the TCM which is in the oil pan. His diagnosis is correct if it indeed burnt, but sometimes older techs rather go big incase the the shark bites they have enough to eat for a couple of days. Many do not want to go back to the little fish.

ditto, 2nd opinion. $4k is worth it to check around, and as Bull said, get someone to just try to change the fluid, get the right amount and see what she does.
