Post Mishimoto G37 Catch Can Kit Thoughts

Thought I post what I think of this piece of kit and a little info on it for others. Kit is pretty easy to install, and it is recommended to check the cans initially at 1000 miles. For my G37, I check it every 2 weeks, I get almost nothing on the passenger side. The drivers side is where most of the sludge shows up. I did not take a measurement, but it gets around half full for my car every 2 weeks in the winter and much less in the summer. Pretty solid kit, and the cans are 3oz each. Here is a picture of it after 700 miles (2 weeks). Didn't see really any posts about this kit on here, so I figured this might help some.

Thanks for posting feedback for this kit. I've been checking out catch can set ups after doing my 90k service because the TB were nasty. This kit looks really nice and complete but I feel it's way over priced.

This is the alternative kit I've been looking at :

Thanks for posting this info and pics. by chance have you noticed any leaks around the valve covers (corners / gasket points)? Why would there be more or less sludge on one side than the other??

No leaks, I did really heavy maintenance on the car, and put in a lot of new parts and all brand new fluids. Sorry but I don't know why the drivers side gets more content in the can then the passenger side. In Mishimoto's blog post on the kit, it was different for them. They got more in the passenger side can, but it looks like it has water added to it. Np!

They look great, very OEM. I really like how their hoses are all cut & bent to fit perfectly. That's impressive. And if you've peace of mind about collecting that oil instead of burning it, by all means job well done.

But $425? I mean, I wouldn't mind adding that to my engine bay, but... OMG.

Hey OP, that looks like the R2C intake kit on your car. Can you back up and take a whole-bay pic of your setup?

Thank you! Yes the kit is very expensive, I think part of the price is the lifetime warranty on all the components in the kit, the pre-bent tubes, and the cans themselves have a pretty robust filter setup. Though I agree with everyone that the kit is out there in terms of cost. I got mine brand new off Amazon for a little cheaper. I will say Mishimoto has great support and answered any questions or concerns I had. As some pointed out, there is quite a few other alternatives that cost less and should be just as effective or better.

One small mod I did to the cans is when I got them I swapped the aluminum 3/8 NPT stop plugs on the bottom of the cans for some high pressure brass ones. These came with sealant already applied from McMaster Carr. I did this because the pipe tape on them was pretty brittle it seemed. Easy fix would be to reapply some pipe tape.

Also, what's the process for removing the cans? It looks threaded at the top... does that mean you have to work your hands underneath to unscrew things? If that's the case, seems awkward, like you could accidentally dump the contents.

Great question, so there is a couple ways to do this. The bottom of the cans have a 3/8 NPT thread, so you can hook up a drain line or a QDC. How I do it is, I unscrew the 6x M4 bolts on top of the cans. I then unscrew the 3x M6 bolts from the bracket. I remove the bracket it by sliding it out forward. I then unscrew the left can, and dump the contents into a HDPE container. I then do the right one, I use paper towels to wipe the baffles inside the upper part of the cans. I also wipe inside the cans themselves so they are nice and clean. The hose lines for these have a bit of extra length to them so it's easy to move them around. One important thing is to unscrew the bottom of the can, you need to rotate them clockwise, not counter clockwise. The bottom part of the cans have a nice knurled surface for grip. All the seals on the cans are Viton gaskets. Its a very easy and not a messy process.

It helps in the context of how it looks with the R2C intakes. And I have to say it looks great. Like I said, very OEM-ism. I'm really into having a detailed engine bay, with intermixed priorities of functionality and bling. This setup would fit nicely into those priorities...

...except for the price, LOL. So yeah, it helps, but mostly what it does it put the mod on my list as something with potential, if not an actual plan. I'm not shy about spending money on mods, but for this particular one I have to say something under $200 has a lot more appeal to me than something over $400. Just saying. It's all relative and subjective.

You know what would look sweet in your bay? Some black hose clamps from P2M.

Sounds good! Thank you, yeah I do like the look of it. I did see you mention those P2M allen bolt clamps on your R2C post. They do look real nice, thank you for the input. There was no issues with this kit and the R2C kit in terms of clearance. I believe the stock OEM intake you have to move the plastic intake tubing out of the way during the installation temporarily to hook up the new lines for the catch can.
