New G37 Owner needs help!

Hey guys,

I recently bought a 2011 G37x w/ 77k miles for what I thought was a decent price back in January. I do love the car, especially coming from a 2004 I35 that burned due to poor electrical work done at an aftermarket parts shop. Here's a list of some problems I have

I discovered the car had a sunroof drain leak and a week after purchasing that started on the driver's side, fixed it, now its on the passenger side and my car has been at the mechanic for the last week being repaired

discovered a noisy catalytic converter on the right side

power steering leak

dysfunctional clock spring

was told the serpentine belt needs to be replaced

also told by the mechanic that the blower motor needs to be replaced

I also have been told that the green coolant that the car came with is not the correct coolant, so I've been advised to get a coolant flush,

how would you guys rate/rank the importance of these repairs in addition to regular maintenance work?

I would like to keep this car for a very long time, any advice would be greatly appreciated as well as recommendations for where to buy parts from (OEM vs aftermarket)

Continue to fix the sunroof leak.

Cats... get a second opinion. If you do anything about this, recognize it as an opportunity, not a problem, and get high-flow cats.

Your PS may only be weeping. Wipe it down and keep an eye on fluid levels. This is pretty common. However, replace your fluid if you don't know the last time it was flushed & filled.

Clock spring? Whatever. Ignore it.

Replace your serpentine belt. $20 item and a 1/2 hour labor charge.

Blower motor? Like, your HVAC blower? Maybe. Get a second opinion.

Flush & fill coolant fluid on any newly purchased used car. Same for brake fluid, PS fluid, as well as gear oil in the transmission and differential.

What symptoms and/or conditions led to a diagnosis of a "dysfunctional clock spring?" Depending on the issue you may/may not be able to ignore it.

Otherwise, Rochester's advice is spot on.

Mechanical issues aside, get the sunroof leak fixed. Last thing you want is to wake up to a puddle on your floor after a night of rain. Search G37 sunroof drain on youtube if youre still having issues with it.

thanks man, I think this is the direction I’ll lean it. I was getting worried about the price for all the work I have to get done but I guess the rack and pinion and cat could wait a little. I got a Second and third opinion on them but the ps leak seems to be very minor, I topped it off only once 3 months ago and haven’t needed to since.

My insurance company just had to cover the water damage to a few electrical components caused by the sunroof drain leak so my car won’t be ready for another few days.

I assume that I should also get a tune up, replace the thermostat and valve cover gaskets too when I do this?

I wanted to start adding some mods before the summer but with this long to do list I don’t think that’s possible lol.

I am 99.9% confident your clockspring is fine. There are 2 fuses, 2 relays, and associated wiring for the horn that can be checked.

I had to google "clock spring" with regard to cars.

What's a tune up on the G other than replacing the plugs? Maybe cleaning the TB's.

I had used my voltmeter and the fuses and everything seemed to be fine. The horn itself works, there’s just nothing when you press the horn.

was considering getting paddle shifters put in at the same time 🌚

While not a priority, this might help you get it sorted.

Thankfully, on these models, the paddles have nothing to do with the clockspring.

Do you guys have any recommendations for mods once I finally get these maintenance and repairs done? Maybe any I can pair together while i get repairs done ? Are bigger wheels or an exhaust worth it ?

You will need to fix all of those (maybe minus the clock spring and the blower motor), and you would need to fix the rear diff bushing and the galley gaskets after that. Your car is 2011, so the galley gaskets are still papers, and it has 77k miles so the rear diff bushing is about to be gone. While you replace your galley gaskets, make sure to replace your water bump because they are right next to each other, and it's a pain to open and close the timing chain cover. Also, replace all of your fluids and spark plugs as well, and make sure to clean the throttle bodies well!
