Forgot how to drive my G (long story).

A loooong time ago I bought a new 95 Maxima SE 5 speed that car was awesome! I liked the platform so much I eventually moved on to an 02 Maxima SE 6 speed. There was a slight overlap and I was driving both cars for a couple months. One time on the highway while driving the 95, I tried to shift in to 6th. There was a little grinding before I snapped out of auto-pilot and went back to 5th.

I've had my G since 2010 with 3 miles and was planning on giving to my oldest boy when he got.his license but I really love the car.. We ended getting him 2020 Civic Si (6 speed). I have been driving that car around for a couple days and got used to the light clutch and shifting since I have a Stage 2 clutch in the G.

This morning I could not get my car into reverse and had to have my younger son push me out of the garage and down the driveway. While waiting at the bus stop I realized that unlike the Si, the same G that I have been driving for 10 years, that I have put 150k fun-filled miles on, requires me to push the stick DOWN and then over to R!!! I felt like such an idiot.

Lol maybe that's a sign you are getting older and forgetful. This reminds me of a time, many years ago, when I test drove an S2000 and at the time, I didn't know that you had to press the stick down and right to get into reverse, so I couldnt find R and had to have someone push me out of a driveway during my test drive.

Kinda embarassing, but i think it's much worse in your case since you drove the G for 150k miles and forgot how to get into R, haha. Brainfart maybe?

It's like getting stuck on a familiar password, or lock combination. But there's a shift pattern in the bezel, and only so many ways to do this, so...

The first time after I bought my E46 for the life of me I couldn't get it into reverse. But once I learned it was fine, it really is odd when we forget things we've had muscle memory with for so long.

Twenty years of riding bikes. Been off since summer of 2012. Last august I went to test ride a potential purchase - bmw k1600gt (160hp, 130 ft lb torque) not a beginner's bike by any measure. It was a bit awkward at first. Throttle (by wire) seemed awfully responsive (what a difference a decade makes in bike tech). Only stalled once and was fine once under way. No issues with shift pattern (1 down 5 up). Talk about muscle memory. Even remembered how to make left/right turns. Sorry, no reverse, only the goldwing and a few other bikes have an actual reverse (usually driven by the starter).

Seems car mfg's have standardized the general shift pattern (1-5/6/7), but not reverse. Owner's manual comes in handy at this point.

It is the same for those of us who routinely drive 5/6MT's only to get into a car with a automatic slushbox and have momentary "brain farts." I can't tell how many times I tried hunting for the clutch pedal and shift the auto stalk...

I travel weekly for work, and almost always need a rental car to get around. My left foot still sometimes goes for the phantom clutch pedal to start the car. Also when I’m back home, the G’s tighter steering (compared to Malibus, Camrys, Altimas, etc.) usually catches me surprise.

Really glad a ****** my G sedan when I did, because these “sporty” sedans out now are pretty weak...

I have gotten into my wife's 2006 lincoln before and pushed the woodgrain trim where my start button would be. She laughed at me for that and when I rest my hand on the shift **** (she asks if im going to shift her automatic)

I've been driving my slushbox-equipped G for going on five years, and I still find my left foot going for the clutch just before coming to a stop.

Replaced the the rotors and pads on my Wife's Venza . Fronts first than the rears, no issue piece of cake except for the E Brake had some issues . I go to reverse out of my Driveway to bed them in and the car would not budge . I was disgusted .....so a ton obscenity's later & I'm jacking the rear of the car up and removing the driver side, heavy as hell 20 inch rim to check for issues .......I spot the problem , it's actually very reassuring that the car will not budge with quality wheel chocks installed behind the front wheels that you forgot to remove when you lowered the car the first time , not reassuring is in my anger of having to lift the car again and install the jack stands I did not remember to put the wheel chocks back on otherwise I catch the issue a lot sooner .....Getting older sucks
