It's so bad! It's like they forgot to take off the camo bits to disguise what car it actually is and accidentally painted over it.

 

You know how sometimes something is so beyond tacky and ugly that it's actually awesome?

This isn't one of those times.

When I want to compare vehicles I list everything I like about each. Recently I got a bit more advanced and started with the things I care about most at the top. I tried to compare some features head-to-head. This is my list between the Civic Si and the GTI 40th anniversary. I really like the 40th anniversary GTI, but the check marks indicate the features I like better in each car and it looks like the Civic wins. Unfortunately, it really comes down to if I can actually get either of these cars due to extremely limited availability.

 

Okay guys I am seeing myself fall into a trap. When I'm bored at work, I'm starting to look more and more into E90 M3's and the desire is growing. I've been doing research on them and they are growing on me more and more. Their rarity as the only V8 M3 (that revs to 8400 and sounds glorious) is growing and prices will appreciate over time; in fact they're already starting to rise.

When comparing it to my G, I just get a more "prestigious" sense because it's more of a true sports car and it's more of a gem than the G. I guess I don't have a lot of "pride" owning a G, mostly because of the stereotypes associated with their owners, and proof exists in how many of them are modded horrendously and ruined.

On top of that, I am mostly done with power mods on my G and I am left feeling a bit dissatisfied with the terribly sluggish stock drivetrain / transmission. I'm at the point where, even though I love my mods, it still doesn't give me the level of satisfaction that I want until I'm willing to spend several thousand dollars to "fix" it. I do have the RJM clutch pedal, but I still need a lightweight flywheel, stage 2 clutch, 4.10 FD, and a diff brace to feel like I'll finally be happy. Obviously I could do the diff brace next which is cheap.. but the car just feels so heavy and slow with the other components I mentioned.

I would only sell the G if I could get $23-25k out of it. The M3 would cost me anywhere from $32-35k. As of right now, I am not planning to go through with this whatsoever, but I can feel my mind/heart slipping away from the G and toward the M3 bit by bit. I don't think it's because I have to buy a new vehicle every x amount of years, nor do I get bored with the ones I've liked. I had my RSX Type-S for like 7-8 years and HATED getting rid of it and I miss it.

Someone talk some sense into me. Help? Do I just need to stop looking at M3's and resist the urge?

TL;DR - I love my G, but it's missing some mods that still make it feel sluggish (lightweight flywheel, clutch, 4.10 FD) and it doesn't feel as premium or rare as a true sports car. I've been considering switching to an E90 M3. Should I stop this train of thought right now and stop looking at M3's?

 

Reliability nightmare. At this point the newest is a decade old. I think it's the rod bearings and variable valve timing or vanos parts that are big ticket replacement items.

I'd sacrifice 900 rpms and do the flywheel, clutch and 4.10s and enjoy the reliability of the G. $23-25K for a G37 seems steep, but I haven't paid close attention to the used car market lately to know if it's still inflated.

 

I'll find one that has the RB done already and throttle actuators too..

Ive been seeing 6mt sedans with more mileage and worse condition than mine go for $17-19k~. I'm thinking I could get $23k minimum because of the condition of my 6mt, but who knows?

 

I would post it and see what kind of interest you get. Keep in the mind the used car market is starting to calm down a bit due to economic conditions.

I think in a dealer financed environment $23k could be plausible just not too sure about that figure on the private resale market.

Either way I understand your feelings on the G. Great car in many many ways it just never passed the have to look back test.

 

My best friend in NC has an E90 and has a love/hate relationship with it. Total PITA to fix, parts are obscenely expensive, and his is the DCT so it's sometimes iffy in terms of programming. When it's ON, it's a hoot to drive. The rest of the time he's limping it around. He also has an FD RX7 and a few handbuilt turbo miatae so he's just a glutton for punishment LOL

 

So good news/bad news on the new car front. I believe I moved up to #5 on the GR Corolla list recently, but got an email yesterday that a white loaded Core version would be available in 4-5 weeks. Black was my 1st choice, but just like my G37, white looks pretty good to me on this car too so I put my name on that car. Not 5 minutes later I get a call from the doctor's office telling me that the MRI I had done the day before showed that I need back surgery. F-ing perfect! So now I am not even sure I will be able to drive it. About an hour after that I get an email from Acura that next week you can put an order in for a Type S that starts at $52,000!?! $7k more than a Civic Type R??? Wow! So I may or may not have a much more entertaining car to drive in June.

 

Lol yeah parts for it look pretty expensive. Good thing is, the car doesnt need much as far as performance mods goes. Intake/filter, exhaust (pricey) and a tune and that's basically it.

It would definitely be more expensive to maintain, but at the same time it's not even my daily since I drive a company car around town, and my wife's gas saver when going out of town, so I won't be putting lots of miles on it anyway. This leads me to my next point:

The M3 will only continue to appreciate, while my G will not (it may stay the same since it's a unicorn?).... So thinking long-term, I may be better off switching to the M3 sooner than later?

 

Agreed, overpriced for sure. I'd have expected it in the mid-upper 40's. The Type R used to be under $40k just until recently too.. I understand economy is bad but above $50k puts it in the range of many other desirable cars.
