The Sedan Exhaust Thread
Yeah I have to be honest. I hate what the HFCs have done to cheapen the sound. The drone between 1500-2000 rpm is unbearable. The raspiness ****ing sucks and it sounds like garbage unless you’re getting after it. I’m selling them for 350$ if anyone you know is interested. Everything I said before was true but driving it this morning was terrible. Going with Fast Intentions RHFC.
I've learned to either cruise at 2K+ or give very little throttle at 1.5K.
I fully agree. I definitely feel self conscious even with my setup. Unwanted attention when you're not even trying to go fast.
And they're not wrong, because I had to stop immediately at the next light, not 100 yards ahead, so... stupid me. But for sure if the car were more quiet, it wouldn't have been such an event.

I will probably get tired of this exhaust setup after a year, meaning I might sell the Z1s and go stock or RHFC if I find a used pair. It sounds great, don't get me wrong, but you kind of have to drive it in manual mode to enjoy it. Otherwise in automatic mode, you're either cruising by a cop or listening to the horrible attempts at shifting gears in which our transmission is known for. But I also don't think my exhaust is as loud as with Berks. My friend had an ark with Berks and it sounded way raspier than my ark + Z1.
sorry guys if I mislead you. I thoroughly enjoy them and I dont seem to have the same level of rasp as Jake does. It's just I never had stock cats on, so I guess I never experienced the actual MD tone. One day I will, when I swap out my Z1s.
[QUOTE=kroy;4168488]Jake, I can't remember if you had another exhaust before the MD. But IMO most all aftermarket exhausts will drone 1500-2K. Even my stock IPL exhaust had drone at that range. Ark droned with stock cats. Drones a tiny bit louder with RHFC.
I've learned to either cruise at 2K+ or give very little throttle at 1.5K.
This was my first exhaust for my G. Just the Motordyne on stock cats barely had a drone. On a scale of 1-10 drone was a 2 and now it’s a 10

Sorry to hear about your experience. For some reason, I feel like your exhaust is louder than mine or the HFCs aren't broken in yet. I don't seem to be getting alot of rasp but then again, I have nothing to compare it to besides my ark. I NEVER heard it with stock cats, which is probably a con. I think the RHFC will be a better option as it'll create more pops and crackles I feel like. My ark created more pops. As for the drone under 2k, it is definitely prominent but my ark exhaust did the same thing. Regardless, you love the rhfcs

It’s all good, I’m glad I gave it a shot, now I know. From the research I did all the Berks I listened to were the loudest and craziest. I knew what I was getting into I just didn’t realize it would have such a negative effect on the sound. I want loud, just not ****ty loud. Opening it up with the cats is a thing of beauty though.

Makes sense. Now that I think about it, should've probably kept the ark and went with suspensions and wheels. But I'm still happy with my purchase, but now I'm probably going to keep it on stock height and wheels. Quick question: on loudness at 1) cruising and 2) WOT, What would you rate the loudness from 1/10 while on stock cats versus HFC. Just to get an idea if I ever want to switch to OEM or RHFC.
Motordyne w/ OEM cats WOT- 9
Motordyne with Berk cats cruising- 7.5
Motordyne with Berk cats WOT- 11
Scale is still 1-10 lol
All I have are little blurps when I let off the gas. Do you have a manual car?
I feel like you're just adjusting to having an exhaust system in this car period.
Drone at 1.5k
Stock IPL - 4
ARK + cats - 5
ARK + RHFC - 6

I feel like you don’t understand the level of drone I’m dealing with. We have very different set ups. If you were to hear before HFCs on my set up then after it would be clear. Funny, I didn’t need any adjustment period with the new exhaust before the HFCs. The drone was so minimal.
There WAS drone, it was just so minor. Maybe I am minimizing it more than reality but after the Berks it’s just like a puppy dog.
Hopefully you find an option you like, sometimes I drive with my car in 5th gear because of how quiet these Helmholtz resonators make my MD headers and CBE exhaust sound i’ guess i’ like to hear that my exhaust is still there lol.
Jake, sad to hear you aren't digging the HFC + E370 combo but at least you tried both out and were able to choose based on personal preference. Hearing the exhaust in person with both setups is probably ideal for anyone going forward on pulling the trigger.
Too true, Rochester. I've had my fair share of cutouts, wastegate cutouts/open dumps, and straight piped cars to know this. I feel at this point in my life/career I don't really need or want the "always on" factor here. Which brings me to my next point....
Motordyne update #3238653253: Spoke to the tuning shop and when doing a recent install of another E370 system to another customers G37x, they decided to test fit the y-pipe from my system. Fit like a glove. So it turns out that they didn't, in fact, send me a coupe awd y-pipe, but that the transfer case on the 7 speed AT is smaller/shorter than the transfer case of the 5 AT (which I have).
They sent pictures/gave MD a call and they were just as surprised as all of us were/are. So, it's been a learning experience for all parties involved. In going forward, along with having to account for the transfer case on AWD models, it looks like the length of the transfer case between 07-08 and 09+ models dictates what will/won't fit.
Because of this, it's physically impossible for me to order an off the shelf catback from MD, without them engineering a fix for the earlier model 5 AT transfer cases with respect to the y-pipe. The shop has been nothing but awesome here and is currently working things out with MD, and I'm confident every party will walk away with some sort of compensation for their time/troubles.
I'm bummed that I won't be able to have the exhaust I've been fixating on for months, and the whole experience has me burnt out. I'm hoping that through all of this, other forum members that are 07-08 owners won't make the same mistakes, and that the community here will add one more tidbit of knowledge to its vast catalog. It's also given me a bit of perspective now, and if/when I'm refunded the money I spent on the exhaust, I think I'll move my focus to aesthetics rather than noise. This might be the universe telling me to finally order those TE37s and coilovers I've had on my wishlist for weeks.

Well then.... I don't even know what to say to that. That could probably be the worst outcome (but then again, you're making it sort of a positive) that could occur but hey, wheels + suspension is always a great alternative. I kind of wish I went that route instead of upgrading from my Ark, but its alright. Is Motordyne going to compensate you anything for the time (yours and the shops) or is it straight forward refund. Quick question, did you order directly through Motordyne or through a authorized retailer. Sorry to hear that sir, very unfortunate.
Maybe now I can pick your brain on the Ark. Did you suffer from drone or that boomy sound everyone always refers to? I’ve been reading that people say it drones with stock cats so I’m just trying to get as good of an idea as I can.
