rough cold idle

This is my second winter with the car, and since buying the car I have noticed if the car has been sitting all day or overnight, and the outside temps are near or below freezing, when I start the car, the engines fast idle is rough for about the first 15-20 seconds and feels as if there is a misfire. Is this normal? If not, any ideas what to check. The car has roughly 35,000 miles.

Otherwise, after the 20 seconds the car idles and drives fine.

Thanks

I've owned several cars over the years (almost all Asian brands) and never found this with any of them. Is it something unique to these cars.

Totally normal, mcola. It's a very mechanical sound, like a diesel.

There's a new "rough idle when cold" thread here about twice a year. I created one too, about four years ago.

Normal for the G37... Not normal on any other car I have owned.
Good thing it only seems to misfire a few times as it warms up.

Later today, I will plug in my scanner and look at the misfire count to see what it is at.

Yes, I started a thread about this about a year ago. For the first about 20 seconds, it sounds like there is a rattle in the engine in the exhaust manifold area. Guys came back saying that was normal.

What I hadn't noticed then because it was much colder, I would start the car and walk away, vs this winter is milder, I start it and sit in it. In that first bit, there feels like 3 to 4 misses that are strong enough to jiggle the rearview mirror.

Its more apparent the colder it is.

Normal, Ok, just another quirk about the beast.

Thanks

Interesting... I scanned my car and looked at the mode $06 data. There are ZERO reported misfires in the last 10 drive cycles. Even though I hear/feel 1-3 misfires during warm up when the temp is below 0 C/ 32 F.

Sounds about normal, I swear I was hearing something too like a exhaust leak, ended up just being too cold after a few minutes it was back to normal.

Yup, bought my G back in January from a dealer, had a 30 day "anything wrong" policy... So I brought it back and they brought it to an Infiniti dealer here in Minneapolis to have them look at it. Infiniti checked it all out, cold started it multiple times, and reported that it was normal for the VQ engine to sound odd for the initial 10-20 seconds on cold start up. So it's all good, I had the same concern.
