Hole in Deck Lid

I just noticed this small hole in my deck lid. It's partially covered by a plastic "plug". The "plug" has the shape of an arrow molded in, and can move fore and aft. Unfortunately it looks like rust is starting to form around the hole.

What is this? Should I remove it?

What does it have to do with the rear camera? Looks more like a drain hole of some sort.

I agree with Photon. Some more info would help. Year, model, etc. Is the hole in a spoiler or deck lid? Do you currently have a rear view camera? If not, that's probably the hole one would poke out of.

I know it's metal or it wouldn't rust. For that you might want to prep sand the rusty area and then apply rust inhibitor, and follow up with a bit o' paint. There's plenty of detailed DIY's on that sort of thing.

It's a '13 G37x. The photo is of the underside of the deck lid (a.k.a. trunk lid). The lid is in the raised position. You can see the latch in the lower center of the photo.

Okay Myles. Sorry about that. I just looked at my car and I have an identical set-up as you described. The pic threw off my perspective and without looking at it in person I couldn't see how small that tab really is.

I am happy to report that I have NO idea what it is for...but it does point at the camera :-)

Sean,

Thanks. Any rust forming around yours?

No rust yet. But...

I replaced the chrome lip with the OEM spoiler last week-week-or-so. When I did, under the lip it was very damp and dirty.

I'm planning this week to take off the trunk-lid liner again and use an automotive silicone to seal up any holes to the outside of the lid. That should keep the moisture, road salt and grime out of the inside of the trunk lid.

I saw on another thread somewhere another person who had encountered the same issue. It's not unique, TG.

Same as above, thought it was higher up, so thus the rear cam response. I checked my sedan and I have the same plug, no rust....maybe it's for wired for a hitch ???? Sorry otherwise got nill

That's the trunk lid drain hole. The stopper is there so that dirt and grime doesn't go in.

All enclosed body panels have similar holes (such as the doors)

Fun fact: these holes are often used by paintless dent removal guys to insert/maneuver the rods.
