Hit and Run

My car was parked at an underground parking lot, and in the morning when I got to my car, there is a big dent on my hood. Looks like a big truck reversed on to my hood. What are my options?? I have contacted security to look at the security camera at the parking lot but they think they probably won't find anything because camera is not facing my car. Am I stuck with paying for this bs?

You are probably stuck paying for it. Your insurance will ultimately pay for it, but in the end, we all know that you will be paying for it too...with deductible plus a possible increased rate.

Are you required to carry any special insurance for these situations, or will standard run-of-the-mill insurance work too?

Talk to you insurance agent.

Find out who or what body shop they recommend

Obtain a couple of estimates

Paying cash can sometimes reduce the cost?

If the damage is close to your deductible then forget making an insurance claim

Talk to your insurance company about it. My insurance company (Wawanesa) paid for a hit and run before and didn't increase the premium. But there is still (DMV) "record" of it, so if you switch to another insurance company, they will take into account of that "incident".

Good luck

Fixing big dent on the good can be pretty expensive. Is the paint gone too? If so you will have to repair entire hood which could add to to cost dramatically.

Btw. Stuff you described happen to my a few times. One time I was able to catch a guy, I saw him from far away backing out his pickup truck.

One day I had weird experience - I went to a mall at 10am, they just opened, to get starbucks coffee. I park my car. It was basically empty underground parking lot but I had strange feeling to park my car somewhere else as someone may run into my car. Car was parked perfectly and there were absolutely no other cars close to my car. I was like Fu*k it. I went to get my coffee, it took me around 3 minutes. When I went back to my car I couldn't believe it, my entire back bumper was destroyed like if some car hit with high speed. It costed my $600 to fix it, some places quoted me close to $900. I payed from my own pocket.

You're not responsible for the damage. Your premium doesn't increase because of this type of claim. Take your car where you feel comfortable getting it repaired, don't be the least bit concerned with where the insurance company wants you to take it. They're concerned with the cheapest repair, not the best.

Get a polic report for your insurance company.

File a police report. Press the parking garage security for footage from other camera angles - its a reasonable expectation.

Comprehensive VS. Collision coverage due to unknown hit-and-run varies widely by state, carrier, and policy, but more than likely will be a collision claim if you more forward with your own insurance. Depending on your deductible, it might be cheaper to buy a new carbon fiber hood or a good used hood in the same color.

Good luck Eric.

I'd definitely purchase an aftermarket hood if your insurance company won't cover it at no cost. Fortunately your bumper cover wasn't damaged, saving you from an entirely separate set of issues. You can get a hood for around $700, vs. the average insurance deductable, and the possibility of higher premiums.
