G37 6MT PS Whine

Hello all. Wondering if anyone has had this concern. My G37 makes this loud whining sound when steering at low speed. Sounds like a po'd cat under my hood. Wonder if the pumps are normally this loud? Any ideas? Thanks.

The pump on my '12 is not overly loud. Have you checked the PS Fluid level? If low - any pump can get whiny...

Strange question - but is it noisy when turning LEFT at low speeds?

I had the reservoir replaced on my wife's car some time ago under ITB 12035. Her car would sound like it was low on fluid at low speeds when going around a local traffic circle ('round-a-bout' in some parts ) - not when turning right, only when turning left. I found that odd. Anyway...the tech was able to confirm the issue simply by looking at the reservoir with the car running. The fix was a new reservoir, not a new pump.

Hope this helps - here are a few more details:

Subject: SB Infiniti; Steering Noise When Turning Left
Summary of ITB12035:
IF YOU CONFIRM A steering noise can be heard in an Applied Vehicle when turning the steering wheel to the left while traveling 15-25 MPH. NOTE - The noise is similar to the sound made when: - the power steering fluid level is low or fluid has trapped air. - the steering is held to full lock with the engine running. ACTION 1. Check the power steering fluid level and adjust as necessary. 2. If the noise is still heard, replace the power steering reservoir tank with either of the new reservoir tanks listed in the Parts Information section. - Refer to the ST section in the Electronic Service Manual for removal and installation information. See this bulletin for further detail.

I'm having this same problem. I have a '13 G37 sedan 6MT, 23k miles. It's really annoying. Dreading the dealership as it's not close and will be a pain, but I'm not sure what else to do.

Well I finally took my car to the dealership and I'm glad I did. They said there was a hole in the power steering "rack" that was allowing air to get in the system, which causes that noise. They are replacing the rack under warranty.

Side note - my loaner car is a 2014 Q50 hybrid and my god, is it horrible. Such a soulless, lifeless vehicle. I can't even begin to describe how thankful I am that I got the G37 instead...

Furlow, I imagine a PS rack replacement includes an alignment too?

I have the same noise; have had it since day 1. It's bugging me enough that I will take it when it warms up some. Between that and the trans whine, this car sure has alot of noises for a 'premium' vehicle/price tag.

Sounds similar to this, right?

I didn't ask about an alignment, and I don't even know why that would be necessary? I guess the rack is connected to the wheels somehow?

Hard to hear your video, but admittedly my laptop speakers are terrible. I noticed you revving the motor a bit - that is when I hear mine as well. It seems like the more load there is on the engine, the noisier the PS is.

I hear that in your video, and don't have that noise in my car.

You're still under warranty, Jsolo. What does your dealer shop tell you it is?

I think there's a misunderstanding. I said above it sounds like the noise in that video, not that it was a video of my car

The video is actually from another user on the 370z site with a similar noise.

I don't generally free rev the engine so not sure if mine would still have the noise after revving or not.

The alignment should be done as removing the rack involves transfer of the tierod ends from old to new rack. I believe our cars only have outer tie rod ends, not inner. Tie rod ends (item #9 below) adjust the toe setting, so an alignment should be done. In fact, I'd request a pre/post alignment printout.

Had the dealer give it a listen. They heard the whine. Something else the tech noticed was while idling, the fluid in the reservoir was bubbling. He thinks it's the pump, not the rack, but will have to give it a closer look to determine for sure.

I'll deal with this once it warms up a bit. My guess is the bubbling is the air entering the system. With that in mind, could really be any one of the steering hydraulic related components or maybe even a loose fitting someplace.

Mine ended up being the pump. They tried the rack first but it still made the noise. Oh well, nothing lost for me. Except for the $150 in gas/gift cards that I had in my center console. Such BS! I thought to myself that I should take them out, but then I'm like "this is Infiniti, that wouldn't happen here."

Infiniti is just a sugar glazed form of Nissan Not sure if you'll be able to recover the gift card but definitely bring it up to the shop manager (not service writer). Really, what were they (the tech or porter) doing in the center console?!@#

Worthwhile lesson, don't leave any valuables in the car when bringing it in for service. I just have a tollway transponder in mine, otherwise no cash or other monetary instruments. Probably a good idea to include a sign "PLEASE DO NOT WASH THIS CAR!" - or you'll get swirls in the paint for free.
