i have some very small rust spots sprinkled here and there on my car, but they are much smaller than this and i figured were due to rocks or such since they are not located on an edge or end of body piece

That may be rail dust. What it is is pieces of brake dust that may have small amounts of metal in it are embedding themselves into the clear coat because they are very hot and then start to rust over time. A good clay bar cleaning will get rid of it.

Same thing happened to the rear trunk of my 2009 g37x after a year and a half. The dealership didn't blink twice they reprinted the trunk under warranty.

A lot of dirt gets trapped under the chrome piece on the trunk lid. I found 7 small rust spots along the top edge. I cleaned them, applied zinc primer, paint then clear. I'm confident that they won't come back. I do feel that the spots formed because of my neglect to wash the car through last winter. It went 5 months without a wash...
