Ten years ago I was rear ended Twice within a 3 month period. I had a Toyota Camry at the time. The first hit was by a young woman who was putting on makeup and didn't see the red light. The car was repaired and shortly thereafter, I was again hit in the rear by a guy who bent down to pick something up while driving. I traded the car in after the second repair. Dealers can tell when a car has been repaired and they deduct accordingly.
I didn't think I was injured, so I didn't claim any personal damages. Years later, I discovered that my neck was injured, causing arthritis in my neck. I am now living with constant pain in my neck. My advice is to see a doctor, preferably an orthapedist to make sure you are not injured.. Cars can be replaced, but your body can't.

OP definitely keep an eye on your wife. Like many other people have said the symptoms do not show up right away. As for the car, it would be very close call because the entire rear end needs to be replaced.

Do you still own the car after it was fixed? If so, anything to think about when I do the inspection before taking it back? If you sold it did you go after diminished value? If so, how did it work out? I'm going through and doing research to be prepared to deal with this....
Thanks. I still own the car. Luckily, the shop did a fantastic job. I have moonlight white, so I was worried they can't match the tri-coat pearl paint, but they did it so well you wouldn't even know the car was hit. They did have to replace both rear quarter panels, so make sure everything is straight and the gaps are tight. I would also check and see if there are any weird noises and make sure the car drives straight after an alignment. As far as diminished value, I'm not sure what the laws are in your state. It doesn't apply in California, so I couldn't have done that even if I sold the car. Good luck and hope your wife is ok.

Here is a link to when the car was repaired:

We love my wife's G37. We have owned it since May 2009 and it had 55K miles. Garaged and well maintained. Not one issue with this car at all.

Last week, a young girl rear ended my wife as she was stopped at a red light. The other drive was estimated going 40 mph. Both drivers ok, thank god.

We are now waiting for the tear down estimate and insurance company to let us know the outcome. In FL, you need 80% of value to declare total loss.

So here goes...air bags did not go off, rear bumper demolished, both rear panels crumpled and creased, rear trunk section crushed, exhaust smashed downward and is very loud (looks like the exhaust pipes are bent downward between the cats and muffler), panel under gas tank bent, drivers side rear pillar there crease near rear upper door, rear door will not open and the space between front door and rear door not equal (like entire side shifted), front drivers side door very hard to open. All I can say, this car is safe!!

Thoughts? Total loss?

Thanks for the thoughts.

I'd guess it's totalled.

Quick update. Heard from the collision center. $18,750 worth of damage, they are totaling it as it exceeded 80% of the value (FL law). Once they tore it down, they saw the damage to the rear structure. So now I start figuring out good replacement value and see what the first offer is from the insurance company. Then go from there.

Thanks again for everyone's replies and thoughts.

Good to hear! If it was only one quarter panel then should be fixable, but two panels and trunk section would take a lot of hours to line up. Glad it worked out for you and your wife!

I don't know too much about the insurance process. But you can claim it as salvage. Insurance should reimburse you the amount of the car BLUE BOOK, if you don't want to get it fixed. Even if you do get it fixed it will take few weeks and that paint job is very hard to match.

Sorry to hear about this- I have been dealing with a similar situation but they have not totaled it. At about $15.5k damage on a 2009 g37... Let us know what ends up happening! Good luck.

I just settled with State Farm. $20,900 value, plus tax and tag fees, so getting back $22,000 check. It was close to what I saw as clean retail market value so I did not go back and forth. Wife was happy with the deal.

All I can say, State Farm has done a great job handling this and they said do not worry about the at fault driver's insurance company, they will deal with it all.

So now we go car shopping...

Sorry to hear about your situation. No clear winner in any of these situations.

In FL where I live, you have to have 80% damage to value. With the $20,900 value, 80% is $16,720. We exceeded that by $2,000. You are about $1K under (assuming same car, same value). You might want to see if you can add in diminished value claim to that estimated damage to get to your state's total loss threshold. Just an idea, but I never have done this in the past.

Good luck with your outcome.

Damn. I would not have guessed that would be totalled. Shows how little I know. Glad you got an easy settlement from the insurance co.

Frame damage, if the doors are hard to open, it was way out of alignment. I'm glad you got a fair deal out of it.

That's not a bad thought... My car was pretty mint, 50k miles, no issues, well maintained... While I might have a bit more peace of mind getting the total value back instead of a car, I don't know if I can deal with the headache of car shopping again! Are you driving a rental currently? And do they provide it until you find a new car? Good luck to you in finding a suitable replacement!
