G37 Rear Ended - Thoughts?

First time posting, but like some thoughts....

We love my wife's G37. We have owned it since May 2009 and it had 55K miles. Garaged and well maintained. Not one issue with this car at all.

Last week, a young girl rear ended my wife as she was stopped at a red light. The other drive was estimated going 40 mph. Both drivers ok, thank god.

We are now waiting for the tear down estimate and insurance company to let us know the outcome. In FL, you need 80% of value to declare total loss.

So here goes...air bags did not go off, rear bumper demolished, both rear panels crumpled and creased, rear trunk section crushed, exhaust smashed downward and is very loud (looks like the exhaust pipes are bent downward between the cats and muffler), panel under gas tank bent, drivers side rear pillar there crease near rear upper door, rear door will not open and the space between front door and rear door not equal (like entire side shifted), front drivers side door very hard to open. All I can say, this car is safe!!

Thoughts? Total loss?

Thanks for the thoughts.

Hard to say... it will all depend on what the frame looks like in the rear of the vehicle, which is something you cannot see in this picture. Also if the rear diff, axles, hubs are damaged, that'll add a good amount of cost as well.

Just an uneducated guess, but I wouldn't think that car is anywhere near totalled. Also that is not anywhere close to a 40 mph impact. I work in transportation safety and have seen quite a few wrecks in my day. How is your wife feeling? Soreness/numbness/tingling is normal but make sure she gets examined thoroughly and treated for any issues.

10 to 1 the girl who smashed you was texting/messing with ipod/talking on phone/fiddling with radio.

Looks like the car did its job and absorbed the impact. I'm glad everyone is okay (hopefulle your Morkie is, too). If there's significant frame damage it could get expensive quickly. Did your wife hit the person in front of her? That impact looks significant enough to bump the car in front.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. And thanks for asking about my wife. She is amazed that she feels 100% fine. I guessed the other driving was texting or distracted for sure. Other folks didn't think it was totaled, but I was not sure since the rear door is stuck closed (not level with the front of the door, seems rear door slightly bent up shifting the front of the rear door off).

Well, if they fix it, my wife already said she wants a new car. So now I'm in the issue of selling it and that big carfax "accident" bulls eye comes up. Oh well, I'll try for some diminished value pay from the other insurance.

Thanks again!

Morkie luckily wasn't in the car. She tapped the car in front of her, only a mark on both. Since we have been married, 16 yrs, I kept stressing to her to keep safe distance when stopped. She said she did and when she saw her coming and not slowing down, she hit the brake pedal hard.

I did tell her that I'm still going to the Rolex 24 in a few weeks. I guess I just wont be driving the G to get there

It may not show up as having been in an accident on Carfax. My wife's car recently was hit to the tune of almost $9K in damage. I was concerned about that and the body shop owner said not to worry, that they don't report it Carfax and the wreck wouldn't show up. I haven't checked it yet. I don't know how that works but I don know that I have checked cars that I know for a fact were wrecked and repaired but Carfax showed nothing.

I thought it was the insurance company's job to report any damages to the car? Am I incorrect here? Definitley not a concrete thought.

First, I'd like to say thank goodness your wife is ok.
Car did it's job, a friend of mine had a 12 g37x with substantial front end damages. I realize this is a rear end damage, but IMO it won't hit the 80% mark.

Now the good news, since she was rear ended you will get any deductible.
Insurance company will have no choice.
If your state permits it, Diminished vale claim would apply.

This is not legal advice , however I was a claims Manager for arts & antiques company. Handled a lot of accidents with I'm house attorney & insurance reps.

Good luck with your recovery.

You just have to wait and see what the damage estimate is. We can't determine unless we know the value of your car based on year, mileage, condition, etc...

For comparison, I was rear ended last year. My car was only 1.5 yrs old. The damage was $18k. My car was obviously worth more than $23k at the time, so it wasn't totaled.

I believe that the insurance company is obligated to report it. They reported it when my wifes car was hit out on the freeway by an unlicensed uninsured *ssh*ol. (Hit and run)

OP glad everybody is healthy, could have been a lot worse. You'll get taken car of.

I wouldn't agree to anything until you get medical checkups. You might not be feeling anything now, but it could start causing you pain in a few days.

I was rear ended and felt fine that day, but the next day I could barely move. Ended up doing 2+ years of rehab on my back

Thanks for everyone's feedback. My wife and I appreciate it.

The feedback and thoughts are helping us think through all of this. Health is #one and in FL, we only have 2 weeks from the date of the accident to report a medical related injury.

If it's not totaled, we will sell it and I'll fight for diminished value. The Q50 is on her list of cars, but also some cossovers. I told her she will miss the performance of her G37

Thanks again.

Just read your entire post. Glad you were ok. Seems like the rears of these G37s can take a big hit.

Do you still own the car after it was fixed? If so, anything to think about when I do the inspection before taking it back? If you sold it did you go after diminished value? If so, how did it work out? I'm going through and doing research to be prepared to deal with this....
