Do they really look that closely at the cats during a visual inspection?
We do OBD inspections here in NC and I've seen some places do a thorough visual, some just use a mirror on a pole and others don't even put the car up on a lift.
I have long tube headers w/no cats on my other car and I'll never modify the exhaust like that again. It's a pain in the butt every year to get it inspected.

Facebook is like smoking tobacco, with just as many redeeming qualities... just don't start and you won't have to quit.
Yes, yearly. OBDC readings and visual inspection, but they don't sniff. IDK who does anymore, because lots of states phased that out. California, maybe?
FI cats would pass the visual inspection, because well, it looks like a cat and "there it is", but not if the visual inspection was looking for the appropriate stamp on the cats. That's the part that has me concerned.

There's no "stamp" on the side of these cats AFAIK, other than the rather obvious branding, which I think I'll sand off:

ic:My last car was a 2012 Jetta TDI (a diesel) - I dropped the entire diesel particulate filter system as it is extremely restrictive and the power increase without it, and a tune is tremendous. I had to modify my title to say it was "garaged" at a friends property in the middle of nowhere just so I could get by without having the DPF installed.
VA allows you to run aftermarket catayst equipment, but it must keep the smog emissions within spec of the emissions tests.
I enjoy seeing the new Jalopnik posts and keeping up to date on the latest car stuff
