Sedan Chat Thread
Question for all you sedan guys with the 7AT. While driving around town I have been using the DS mode for shifting, this past week or so. I like the feel and control I have over the car but I am worried (maybe needlessly) that I could be causing wear and tear on the engine and tranny. Any opinions on this? I figure Infiniti wouldn't make this mode available if it would cause mechanical issues, but a little reassurance or caution from you all would be nice.

Warped,
I used to drive a 7AT. Driving in DS remaps the transmission to hold the car in lower gears longer, significantly increasing engine RPM for a given vehicle speed and throttle position. More engine rpm generally equates to more wear, but there shouldn't be a warranty issue. From what I've seen there is a substantial hit to fuel economy - I think there are posts on G37.com on the subject.
I used to put mine in DS running twisty canyon roads or anywhere else where I wanted to be able to use my right foot to modulate between power delivery and engine braking. But I would switch it back for normal driving. Pretty easy, just a flick of the wrist. I actually ended up using DS and sometimes manually shifting with the lever more than I used the paddle shifters.

FYI: The GTR doesn't have a "launch control" feature.

Doesn't that smell like BS to you? Sure does to me.In his defense, I turn off traction control to get up the hump in my driveway when I normally can't because of snow. And to truly launch the car well from a standing start in the summer, traction control is off there, too. But this is a bread & butter G37... not some over-engineered, world-class supercar.
Does this imply that I *shouldn't* be turning off TC and dumping the clutch at 3000K in order to hit that sweet-spot launch from a dead stop? That question kind of brings me uncomfortably full circle to Warped Ideas' question, doesn't it? LOL

Watching that guy say (interpreted) that it's only a coincidence the car is faster with VDC off, and it was designed that way to extract you from being stuck in snow...

Now yes... $70k car (back in '08) it better take a beating off the lot. But there is A LOT of computers in the GTR and you're bound to have issues. Just so happen to be under "launch control" the trans couldn't take the abuse of those extra RPMs.
It seems like the majority of the G crowd is more concerned with looks than function. Which is different than other car enthusiast boards I've been on.
My mom had that exact dinnerware pattern. In like 1985.

Edit: Wrong term used!

But even I agree that some take things a little too extreme. Like this car in Japan for instance:
