Driving a Q loaner

My 37x is gettng the wheel bearings replaced under warranty. Q handles and rides nice in spite of the Potenza 225 55 tires. (not as nice as my Michelin Pilot AS3's). The tranny is butter smooth. Interior goodies are really nice; love the G force meter and LED lighting. love the front end, not so crazy about the side profile. Going to inquire tomorrow about the tranny update. I dont really have a problem with mine but if they can get it close to the smoothness of the Q it would be an improvement.

When I took in my car twice recently for service I wasn't that lucky. I got a 25X and a 37X. I was disappointed to get a 25X initially but then changed my mind because I finally got a chance to drive one. My dealer mainly uses 37X's and only has 2 25X's.

I would love to get a Q next time but I have no plans to upgrade my G to a Q. Also the latest tranny update is .27d. I finally had my done.

Is that another update to the TSB that came out about 16 months ago?

Here's the TSB they used. I found it on Infiniti help and brought it in with me.
Scroll down, ITB12-027d dated November 14, 2012
I was going to attach the .pdf but it's too big for this site. It's only for 2009-2012 G's.

Me neither!! its nice, but expensive! Still hearing the cavitation sound though, and some brake pulse sometimes. Maybe i will go to a brake shop and get it checked out.

how close did the update come to the smoothness of the Q. I know the Q is new with fewer miles, but can you quantify the difference for us? Dealer gave me a bull story that they set the 09 up to shift like DS mode for sportiness, and backed off in the Q to make it less sporty... i didn't say anything but i know better. its the same tranny.

Let me add my two cents worth. I'm a long time G driver (7 years with a G35, then bought a new G37x two years ago). I also drove a Q50 loaner recently, albeit for only one day. I must say I was somewhat let down by the Q. Aside from neat apps like the G-force meter (whose novelty would wear off pretty quickly), and a lot of integration of new media technology, I didn't find much to marvel at. I have always enjoyed the combination of performance and luxury the Gs have given us over the years. I have an aggressive driving style so throttle response and handling are key considerations for me. While I know the G37 and Q50 share the same engine, the Q in sport mode just didn't have the same snap as my G. Maybe they have tuned the engines differently or played with the torque curves on the new model, but stepping hard on the right pedal in the Q did not feel as satisfying as in the G. For one thing, Infiniti has gotten rid of the lovely growl the G37 gives off under hard acceleration. Some car reviewers called the G37 engine "coarse sounding" (like that's a bad thing) but I love it and the Q just sounds like an ordinary family sedan by comparison. Likewise the G37 brakes feel superior to the Q. I found myself having to hit the brakes sooner and harder on the loaner. And what was Infiniti thinking about when they decided to mess with the steering? For years, all the major auto reviewers have pointed out the superb precision and feel of the G's steering compared to its competitors. Give me that over the Q's electonic steering any day. But I do expect steer by wire will improve over time so maybe this is just a function of Infiniti adopting the technology before its ready for prime time. All this said, I do love the appearance of the Q50. The swooping body style, and the aggressive styling of the headlights, grill and front spoiler are beautiful to gaze at.

Before Q fans jump all over this like starving dogs on a meat wagon, I know it's not fair to criticize the Q50 based on a one-day drive, but that's all I have to go on right now. If I was a buyer who was new to the Infiniti brand I would probably have no problem buying and enjoying the Q50. But my history with the G37 and G35 makes me hope that before the time comes to trade in my current ride Infiniti remembers that what has differentiated them in the luxury sport market over the past few years has been the ability to offer a real sport enthusiast's car, with just the right level of technology and comfort to be able to offer it at the lower level of the price range for that market segment. Im not sure the Q50 is that car.

Wow! What a nice write up. But same for me, I was let down by the Q50. I had this car for a loaner for about a month. I like the idea of the double screen but miss the G center console look. Almost has a accord look to it.

greycat i agree with you wholeheartedly! Its bland compared to the G but isn't that how car progressions go? I had a 2002tii years ago (BMW) and it was the precursor to the 318/323 etc. It was sportier by far. The Q interior was bland, modern but bland. And there was no punch when you hit the pedal like the G. no neck snapping acceleration. And no growl. I had a Pathfinder (3) and the original had a growl. the 2nd one I owned had no growl and more "refinements". They should have kept the G and made the Q a different model, or a "family" G. Going for a brake check and to check the annoying cavitation i keep hearing Monday and driving a loaner again. Wouldn't mind a new Altima instead....

Your asking the wrong person I did not get a Q loaner. As far as my experience withe new programming, before the programing I used to use M all the time in the hwy, for the added response. Now the gearbox is so responsible in D compared to the stock programing that I have not used M or DS since the reprogram. My car never had the major delays that other have reported in the 7AT thread, but the new programming has transformed my car.

Also till I had reflash done my car was still using the original 09 program who's only issues were the rough downshift. I never installed any other transmission program till .along the way till 027D.

Or maybe a GTR loaner?

So I have had a Q50 AWD for the past two days as a loaner and here are a few things I took away from it...

-This has been one of the noisiest cars I have driven in a while. I am pretty sure that the weather stripping around all of the windows is either not thick enough or that the windows aren't properly seated inside the weather stripping

-The exhaust is even quieter than the stock exhaust on the G37 sedan, which is already too quiet IMO.

-The Intouch system is pretty cool, but the top screen is absolutely pointless unless you have the navigation package. I have had it freeze up on me while navigating through my iPod (via usb). Overall it is very laggy, I do wish that the little **** by the cup holders that controls the top screen controlled more, which would allow you to keep your eyes on the road more instead of having to concentrate more on making sure you're touching the right spot in the screen. Also I wish that the bottom screen had the anti-glare glass on it like the top screen does because there is a lot of glare and other reflections on it that can make it difficult to see what is showing sometimes.

-The speedometer cluster is beautiful at night. Infiniti really did a great job with the screen in between the speedometer guage and the RPM gauge.

-The transmission seems to be a lot better, I do like it better than the 7at that is in the G mainly because I hate how it is suppose to adapt to your driving habits, I would much rather adapt to it and know what to expect. Eco mode is annoying, but its suppose to be so that it can be "efficient", although on the 4hr round trip I took in it I averaged 23.5 mph in eco mode, so I really see no difference in that verses my G, actually my G gets about 1mpg better on that same trip. Sport mode is not sporty enough. It, just like eco mode, tends to up shift too quick and doesn't downshift quick enough, on a side note I never once was able to get it to rev match in automatic mode like I can with my G. One change I did notice was that throwing the shifter over into manual mode is not the same as it is in our Gs, where it will stay in automatic until you manually shift it, it is not DS mode (which I found out the hard way).

-Trunk space may be close to how it is in our G's but it does not have the height that we do, which can be annoying. I could barely get a laundry basket in because the trunk wasn't tall enough.

-I have fallen in love with the front end of the car. The headlights are absolutely beautiful, especially at night. I am happy that Infiniti finally added courtesy lights as well, they even put a LED in the front two door handles, although they only light up when you unlock the car. It would make sense that they would light up when you walk close enough to the car that it detects the key fob and turns on, but oh well.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/G5SS9IIIUHc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

-Lastly, although the Bose system is better than what we have in the G the bass is absolutely obnoxious. I am usually the person who will get into a loaner, or any other car I am driving (except my G since I have a blown speaker...) that will turn the bass all the way up. In the Q I had to keep turning it down. The best way I could describe it is to say that on some songs it almost sounds like that thundering choppy noise you get when you only have one window down, like a helicopter is right above you. Even my passengers noticed it. I just wonder if they didn't put speakers in the right spot to prevent that.

All in all I'm not a huge the Q but I grew to like it more the more I drove it, but there is a lot of room for improvement, mainly small things like wind noise, lag with the Intouch system, and the thundering base from the Bose system. Either way I probably won't be upgrading to the Q50 based on my experience these past two days.
