How quickly does the G warm up?
Hey guys.
Had another question as I'm shopping around at G37's. I had a 335i that used an oil temp sensor to determine the engine temp and usually for the first 5 minutes performance was slightly altered. After 15 minutes of driving it was usually fully warmed up.
Whats your impressions with the G? Does anyone know if it uses an oil temp gauge to determine temp or radiator? I realize that doens't change anything, but I was curious how long the G's performance is altered due to temp.
Thanks!

The G37 doesn't have a RMP limiter like some BMWs but I used to allow the car to idle while it sounded like a truck for the first 2 or 3 minutes but now I just start and go but take it easy until the temp gauge is towards the middle. It also depends on ambient temperature.
I definitely think the G doesn't have an RMP limiter, but it also knows not to go to hard when cold.
The temperature gauge in the cluster reflects coolant temp. Any car should be allowed to have the oil warm up to operating temperature before driving hard. How long that takes depends on many factors. Ambient temperature, how long since the car was last driven, oil viscosity, and other factors. Generally driving the car gently and keeping the RPMs fairly low for the first 5-7 minutes will accomplish a proper warm up.

Clearly many people don't understand operating temperature of an engine. It can idle in the driveway for an long time and the oil won't reach operating temperature. The coolant will, but that's not important. As I said, a few minutes of normal, gentle driving will warm the oil up to operating temperature. Before this happens, don't beat on the car. This time is when the vast majority of engine wear occurs over the life of a motor.
