I have about 80 miles on my 2013 Sedan Sport I just picked up last week. When I accelerate passed 3K RPMs, the engine makes a weird noise...kind of like shaking BBs in a tin can with a little whistling in there too. This lasts until about 4K RPMs. It's real subtle, but gets kind of annoying. Does anyone else hear this noise? I hope it works itself out if it's not normal.

BBs in a tin can? Classic engine pinging sound. Make sure you are burning premium, or try a different station if you do.

 

It could be your cats? If they go bad they can also make a rattle noise like that.

 

IMO you need to let a few more miles accumulate and become familiar with the car before worrying to much. If it is a problem, you have plenty of time and warranty to deal with the issue. I know this is bothersome....I tend to be a perfectionist and noises on a brand new car are irritating.

 

Maybe you should go easy on the break in....just sayin

 

Bet my sound is the same as yours. '07 sedan does the same when accelerating from 1>2>3. Don't hear it anymore after that due to wind noise. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger side. I checked everything down there. I'm ripping my hairs from this. I'm considering putting it on a dyno and see what the hell is going on.

I'm going to fill it up with 93 octane in a few days as it still has the dealer gas in it. I also notice it only happens when in gear. If in neutral or park, I can run it up to 4K sans the sound. Thanks for the replies.

The manuals do make a sort of light rattle noise when shifting at higher rpms. Never heard of such a thing on an automatic though. Is it doing it when the car is hot/cold? Sounds like its coming from the front/mid/rear?

As financeman says, get some more miles on the car (1K?) before deciding if it's a bonafide issue or not. The car being brand new should not ping, even with 87 in the tank. I've filled up before with 87 when doing long stretches of interstate driving with no ill effects.

There's at least 1 knock sensor, possibly 2 (?), which should be detecting the ping. Maybe the dealership is using substandard gas, and the ecu can't retard enough. If that were the case I'd imagine some code might be set.

Free revving the engine to high rpm is not advisable. Engine revving with no load is much different than when driving (load). The ecu even has a safety that won't let it free rev past 4K rpm when not in gear/moving.

 

I'm on my second Infiniti both purchased from the same dealer.
The full tank of gas that comes with the purchase is regular 87 Octane.
I did a test years ago switching from regular 87 for 1 month of 91 octane and 1 month of 93 premium.
I discovered no difference in performance and actually get better gas mileage on regular.
I traded in my 06 G35 with 171796 miles almost all those miles using regular 87.
I'm close to 13k miles on my G37 all of them on regular 87 octane.
No problems with either vehicle using regular.

I get a "pneumatic slightly metallic woosh sound" at about that rpm range when driving it harder as it shifts between 4th and 5th I believe. Seems others have it to and it's normal, not sure if this is what you're experiencing or not.

 

On some 2011 loaners I have heard the whistling as well on WOT. On my 09 I dont seem to have it or the drone from my tires mask it out.
I think its the cats or some metal piece near the cats along with the rush of air causing the slight whistle sound.

Plus when you have a new car all your senses are slightly heightened, enjoy the car and dont worry about it unless you feel it is effecting performance. You have a lot of warranty left.

 

Let's beat this horse some more. Anyone else come up with this? I have it on my '12 7AT at WOT in the higher end. I will only push it when it is warmed up and I only run 91 oct, bone stock otherwise with about 17k miles

 

My supercharged 08 has a ticking/clicking sound. Gets faster with higher rpms.
Comes from lower passenger side. No codes. Any thoughts?

 

I never understood why people buy a premium car that requires premium gas and decides to throw 87 in it to save $1.50 a tank. Am I the only one baffled by this?
