No Premium fuel in NYC! what effect will regular have?

In case you haven't heard NYC and the area got hit by a hurricane. There's a pretty bad fuel shortage, and there doesnt seem to be premium anywhere. What affect will a tank full of regular have on the car? i did a search but everything i found on the forum said pay the extra few dollars you cheap b@$#ard. I'd pay 5x's the price of premium if I didnt have to wait in line for 2–3 hours!

You will be fine, the engine will retard itself, when things go back to normal switch back to premium. I would though if you can use an additive to the regular gas.

Short term - no harm done. Ride it out until things are better and be thankful if you can even get gas. I hope things get back to normal for you guys as soon as possible. We Gulf Coast residents ca truly empathize with your plight.

I recall the manual call for premium, only partial tank of emergency regular use is allowed.

As others said you will be fine. Don't worry about it. Lots of folks use regular or midgrade.

There was ONLY premium gas at the station I went to last night..

But yes, a bit of regular is fine, just don't stress your engine (not that you would be flooring your car during a gas shortage anyway).

Zero issues with regular. The engine computer will adjust to prevent any damage to the engine. You won't get the full advertised torque and HP, though. The least of your worries at almost any time, but especially under these circumstances.

Regular gas will be fine. The performance of your car will just be decreased by a certain percentage.

^ this.

Regular gas in a G may be fine, short or long term (who really knows).
I figured I would perform a little experiment of my own. For the first time in 6 years of owning a 2nd gen G, I thought I would try regular 87 octane fuel.
My most recent 3 fill ups have been with 87 and the result (for me) is plain and simple. The performance, in particular the responsiveness of the engine/acceleration, has turned to crap. My 6MT now actually has lag when I punch it. It reminds me of the little lag my 07X had off the line.
The fuel economy seems to be unchanged but the performance has degraded.
Before anyone says placebo, in my head or whatever, understand that for the most part (while I'm out and about driving around) I have forgotten that I put in 87 and am soon reminded when I drive spirited.

I will stick with the 91 as recommended.

I think the only time that it is pointless to use the non-recommended fuel is when you put premium in a vehicle that recommends you use regular fuel. This has been proven.
Marketplace - Premium fuel in regular fuel car

For all the folks affected by Sandy, I am sure you have figured out by now, you don't have to worry about using regular.
I hope you all get things back to 'normal' asap.
