Of course, it could also be plug and play and a simple disc image is all you'd need to get it working.

thats the thing that scares me. I dont wanna take it apart and screw it up. I shold really go down to the junkyard and find a totalled one.

Infiniti updates them through disk or compact-flash drive (if your car has it)

Entertainment system runs on QNX....the ECU is standalone as mentioned. I think the ECU is standard machine code.

For music storage, buy an ipod and you are all set.

But it would be nice to have your pictures/screensavers and other cool things loaded in there

For music storage, why not just get a USB flash drive or USB hard drive if you have a 2010-2011? No need to waste money on an iPod.

Is there still the 512 song limit? If not, yeah, it's the way to go!

But an ipod has its strong points: nice interface and portability - you can take it anywhere you want to.

Interface of ipod sucks if you have a 2008. In order to go to an artist that starts at T you need to start at A and spin the main **** to get all the way there. TAKES FOREVER. An upgraded HDD would be awesome.

It is very easy to unlock the HDD and there is no encryption. I am in the process of getting my spare HDD unlocked so I can copy it to a SSD. It seems more and more HDD's are starting to fail.

In fact, a guy in Russia has finally found a way to access ALL of the features these headunits/ HDD's have. He's even activated the stock GTR interface in his Murano (link).

It might be easier to source a used headunit and pull the HDD from that, no?

oooh that's cool. Has anyone successfully imaged a new SSD though? I did see that one thread but I dont remember seeing a follow up on whether it worked or not.
