the idea of removing the battery would definitely work but i think that cracking open the fob 3-4 times a week would have long term consequences on its durability and function.

has anyone else found something that effectively shields the RF from the fob? i tried putting it in a candy tin box (and even tried putting the fob in an enameled cast iron dutch oven) and the fob still works.
I did a search and came up with this - not sure if it works as advertised but might be something to try:

cheap prices RF Shield Block Pouch BAG For Cell Phone Mobile - 9Mart.com

Put it in a zip lock bag and then in your pocket? Those snack bags are pretty small.

A condom? LOL, that could look odd. Why not a balloon instead? Plus, no worries with lube/gel getting all over it.

BTW, I kayak a lot. I always put my keys, wallet, and cellphone in separate zip lock bags and put them in my pocket. I've never had a problem getting anything wet!

What if the condom breaks? There’s a history of unintended consequences for this sort of thing.

Sorry, but you're completely wrong about that. Look in the manual about the "Valet Key." You can use the switch inside the glovebox to disable the trunk from opening and use the mechanical key to lock the glovebox.

Then you remove the mechanical key from the keyfob and give it to the valet who WILL BE ABLE TO START THE CAR WITHOUT THE MECHANICAL KEY INSERTED! But won't be able to open the trunk or glovebox. I gave the key without the mechanical key inserted to the tint shop and other places before who were all able to drive the car just fine.

So, please don't do this. You probably won't be able to get the car locked with the keyfob still inside anyway.

I tried putting the key in the trunk. The trunk simply pop right up when I tried to close it. My G also beeped reminding me that the key is in the trunk. I tried to close the trunk several more times, but each and every time the trunk popped right back up. My G is smarter than I thought.

I ordered one of these RFI shield bags off eBay RF Shield Block Pouch Bag For Mobile Cell Phone Data - eBay (item 250416157014 end time Aug-22-10 22:00:49 PDT) works great. Car doesn't know the keys are near it. :-)

You could do what I did last weekend and swim with it in your bathing suit pocket for quite a while before realizing...then have heart palpitations because EVERYTHING is locked inside the car. Then breathe a sigh of relief when it still worked.

As mentioned above, the small ziplock bag or strong balloon is a great idea.
