G37 Sedan: Passenger airbag not always on WITH passenger

Did a search but could not find a thread on this.

Does anyone know the minimum weight required to activate the passenger airbag? The manual only states that it might not be active if a child or small adult sits there. My girlfriend weight just over 100 pounds (she's gonna kill me for posting her weight...haha) but when she sits in the passenger seat about 90% of the time the airbag OFF light is on. Sometimes we can get the light to turn off (airbag on) if she shifts her weight around. It's not like she's majorly slouching or anything. She just sits there but doesn't seem to activate the airbag. This has never happened in my 06 TL. We already took it to Cerritos Acura and they couldn't find any codes saying anything was wrong so they said there's nothing they can do. Can the limit for the airbag be set above 100 pounds? Seems like a really high number to me. Of course this never happens when I sit in the passenger seat so I think maybe it really is just a high weight limit. Anyone know that magic number?

The service manual only says that the airbag is suppressed when the seat is empty or a child or child seat is on it. It just says ADULT (no weight limit) for it to be active.

There's a mat under the seat cushion that provides a signal to the control unit. The mat may not be providing the signal properly so there wouldn't be a code. Have Infiniti check it out - you said you took it to Acura and I don't understand what they would be able to do. Infiniti shoul be able to get a technical spec for the seat and test the mat for proper operation.

I think I read somewhere about there being a TSB about the passenger airbag not working at times. Gonna have to search.....

Yeah sometimes if one of my sisters is in the car (they're both around 100 - 110) the passenger side airbag will turn off. It's not about weight either, the sensor uses a mathmatical formula to see if it's a person sitting in the seat or just something really heavy based on the movements it detects.

Your girlfriend is considered "a child" to the system. She might as well sit at the back, kind of like how the manual and the warnings say.

On a humorous note, FEED YOUR GIRL BRO! LOL!

If the sedan works anything like the coupe, this is normal.

Haha sorry I meant Cerritos Infiniti. I have a TL and this is my girlfriend's G that I was comparing to my TL's airbag sensor. The dealerships are right across the street from each other. Anyway thanks for everyone's input. I guess it makes me feel a little better that this is the case in other people's cars though I still think it's a crappy setup. I already feel like we got a lemon with the whole crooked steering column deal (in a separate thread) so when I noticed this airbag thing I started to get really annoyed. It's not longer a cosmetic issue like my other problem but a safety issue. I guess I will have to cut back on future mods and spend more money on food!

Is this true because the light has been going on and off in my car recently with nobody in the seat. I notice it intermittently and even when I get on the gas sometimes. I have like 3 water bottles rolling around on the passenger floor area so maybe those are hitting the sensor.

This is the exact problem I'm having. Let me try and find my thread where I discussed this in length.

Anyone had any recent experiences of dealer responses to this problem?

I know Nissan launched a recall earlier this year, but it left off the G37. Q50 was covered, and I'll bet the identical components are involved.
