G37x... (Awd for big power is good!)

I'm trying to decide between getting a G37x & putting a turbo kit on it, or getting a BMW 335xi and upgrading the twin turbo system.

I'd like to do the Infiniti, but I'm not sure about the strength of the 6 speed tranny... You can always build a strong engine, but it seems that the transmission is always the weak link.

Any input?

well, you'll never have to worry about a 6-spd tranny in the G37x...

Go buy your 335i and chip it .. done.

Ah, further research shows the 7 speed auto as the only option... Again, my fears are turning the 7 speed auto into a melted puddle with 450-500 HP...

I agree with Peter, if you want to go the turbo route buy the 335. Why invent the bicycle?

Well, I've always liked to do things a bit 'differently' than the same ol' vanilla.

But, considering the good strong 6 speed and proven upgrade path, maybe the 335xi is the ticket...

You'll be stuck with the 7AT on the G37x. However, the tranny will hold power just fine.

Also, to upgrade turbos on the 335, you're gonna have to build the motor anyways.... the G will end up costing you less and result in more power.

FWIW, the 6MT on the G can handle plenty of power; there are cars over 700whp using the stock tranny.

just get the 335, put a JuiceBox3 in it and your in the high 12s. My buddy just ran a 12.9 @ 110mph 2 nights ago at Atcoraceway. His is automatic too. all he did was invest $600 for the chip. putting a turbo in the G is not cheap, not to mention that you are gonna void all warranty on this car. with the Juicebox for the bmw, there is a tuner code clear that you can buy for like $350 and voila, warranty for everything.. My buddy blew his turbos at 7100 miles on his new 335 with the chip, he bought the code clearer and towed the bmw back acting dumb and he got 2 new turbos.

I agree the AT can be built up to hold the power, but the OP has an X. I don't think anyone knows how strong the transfer case is? But I'm all for seeing the first X-TT.

If your buddy wants to mod his Bimmer and run 12's(which is fine with me, and sounds fun), he should pay for his own repairs that were caused by his mods. Just imho. It's beyond me that someone would actually brag about this!
towed the bmw back acting dumb
Maybe it's not an act

Just your typical BMW owner I suppose

So you're advising the OP to get a 335 and mod her then face the consequence of blown turbo's?? Go for the G37x and send her to GTM, after reading through their threads I am fully convinced those people can do the impossible. I'm sure they can build that transfer case to sustain all the power. Still cheaper than building the engine IMO and besides, The 335 is already unrealiable enough in the stock state, I can't even imagine dealing with all the extra "chipped" power

Invisibra, why not extend your options further and consider the Nissan GT-R.

You don't have to tinker with the engineering, you get your 485hp twin turbocharged 3.8L engine, ATTESA E-TS AWD, dual clutch 6 speed transmission. I always considered GT-R as the "Superman" of our "Clark Kent" G37x.

I can't tell you how many threads I've read regarding 335i vs. G37 blah blah where at least four or five guys mention how easy it is to Vishnu chip the bimmer and BAM!! you 100hp instantly -- problems solved!

Yeah, and how long is the engine gunna last -- and yeah, every single BMW stealer is gunna be sympathetic to a modded/chipped BMW and will just swap out yer engine and turbos and give you a car wash and a back rub and you're on your way! Nice. It's that easy, folks.
