Unhappy New 921 Mile Old Baby Almost Died!!... :-(

Hey guys. I've had my brand new 2009 G37S sedan for exactly 11 days. She only has 921 miles on the odometer. Yesterday I was on my way home. I was sitting at a stoplight with my blinker on, waiting for the light to turn green. Suddenly, the engine RPMs went REALLY low and the engine started to shudder like it was about to stall.

I put the transmission into N and the RPMs recovered. When the light turned green, I put the transmission back in D and pressed the accelerator to go. The engine made a HORRIBLE clank and started to knock really loudly. I pulled into the first parking lot I got to, parked and turned the car off.

I let it sit for about 2 minutes and started it again. It immediately started to knock. I turned it back off and called roadside assistance. They came and towed my car back to Sewell Infiniti in Dallas.

I spoke with them today and the said they "saw errors on the vehicle computer and [thought] it might be the engine control systems". What do you all think about this?! I just hope this isn't the beginning of what I have to look forward to. I had problems with my last car (2004 VW Passat) and I thought by buying Infiniti, it would be much more reliable. I'm nervous now...

Sorry to hear that. TH eproblem maybe computer controlled or whatever but those sounds are probably symptoms of mechanical failure...

A mechanical failure is exactly what I'm afraid of...

TX -- doesn't sound like anything described on this forum to date -- so hopefully for you (and all of us) this is an isolated incident and there is not significant damage to your engine and infinti will step up and fix what needs repair -- and you'll be fine for many thousands of miles to come.

The G37 engine has been out for > 2 years almost and I recall reading something similar to this regarding some early model G37x's... the rpms would drop or the car would lurch forward...

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and concerns. I'm beyond frustrated. To those of you that questioned the fuel, I've only put 91 octane (highest available where I live in North Texas) and only from Chevron. But, I don't think that matters since I only had the chance to fill it up TWICE before it crapped out.

I spoke with the service adviser today. They've had the car for two days now. I was told that they had to speak with Infiniti because no one at the dealership could figure out what the issue was. They were told by Infiniti to "re-flash the engine computer", but that didn't resolve the problem. He then said that they next step was to call Infiniti back, report the problem still existed and see what the next step was.

I expressed my concern to my salesman as well as the service adviser that I wasn't comfortable with a car that cost $42,000, has 921 miles on it (I owned it for 10 days before it died) and is having this major of a problem. I told them that I wasn't making car payments on a vehicle that was going to spend an extended amount of time in the shop and that if they kept it for too long, I wanted a new car.

The service adviser said that he has had one other G37 that was "acting strangly" (he didn't elaborate) and Infiniti made the payments on it until it was fixed and that if I wanted a new vehicle that was my choice to "go that route". He asked that I let them continue to work on it until Monday before we escalate things. I agree that is a reasonable request, so I'm going to wait to see what they say.

But, I'm still worried because if they replace the engine, I won't feel good about it. I don't know if this problem has affected the transmission, the exhaust or something else...

What do you all think? Should I wait until Monday or should I call Infiniti USA and talk to them?

I'm not upset with my dealership (Sewell Infiniti in Dallas), my salesman or my service adviser. I'm upset with Infiniti because a car that is THIS new shouldn't have this major of a problem.

Thanks for all your concerns. I appreciate it.

Chris.

Sorry to hear about this. I would hate to be in your shoes.

However, I wouldn't necessarily blame Infiniti as any manufacturer will produce the odd lemon. Mechanical things, even well built ones, will have failures. You just got very unlucky to get the lemon. Doesn't make it better, obviously, but the G gas been getting extremely high reliability ratings and is a pretty solid car IMO. I would chaulk it up to REALLY bad luck. I would bet Infiniti makes this right for you and you end up happy.

Hope this all works out for you.

P.S. If they do need to do something significant (i.e. replacing an engine), I would push for a new car.

I fully expect Infiniti and my dealer to make things right, but if they do have to replace a major component, I am going to push for a new vehicle. I'm just really frustrated.

You always have the option of invoking the Lemon Law on the car. Doesn't sound like it is safe to drive, and you just need to notify them that you will invoke it if they cannot fix it. Give them a fair chance to remedy the situation, then invoke it if necessary. If they can't sort it out in a couple of days, then there are serious problems and need to take the car back. This sounds very unusual, so I wouldn't hesitate swapping cars with a brand new one if they offer it. My brother did that with a Mustang Cobra once, and the second one was perfect. Keep us posted.
