Help! Odometer not logging miles accurately
Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of obtaining a used 08' G37S 6M/T from an auction. Everything is fine apart from this issue where the odometer does not record the distance traveled accurately. For example; we drove it approximately 7 miles, but the digital odometer only logged 1.4 miles.
Has anyone else had this issue? Any idea what might be the problem? I also have the option of voiding the sale, should I just save myself the headache?
Thanks for your time. It's been such a long process trying to get this car but now I'm once again at a stand still.

The issue could be a faulty wheel sensor(s) , ABS unit, AC amplifier, cluster, or a myriad of other things (including intentional tampering). Odometer failures are EXTREMELY rare these days... It is just impossible to diagnose here.
It is your call whether to buy or walk away. If the car is mechanically sound and in decent shape (for a 14/15 year old car) and the price is right then give it your due consideration.
Then there is my golden rule: "If in doubt, don't."

It sucks cause this has been such a long process for me, and now I'm just at a standstill.
Above briefly shows all that is involved in the odometer system. Any variable in that diagram can be suspect or, as I alluded to before, intentional tampering.
Are you able to work on your own car or would you be paying a mechanic?
The main issue that would bother me is not knowing the true mileage of the car and potentially having issues with the DMV in your state with registration/ titling/ etc. as, technically and legally, mileage discrepancies must be reported.
Either way, welcome to the site and keep us updated on the outcome.
Hey!
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my questions. I really appreciate it.
I decided to void the sale following the golden rule. I just want peace of mind in the end. I hope to find something better with patience.

I have this problem as well - need help!
Hi, new member here, but veteran of a G35 forum.
I just purchased an '08 G37s. I drove it home 405 miles. Afterward, I realized it only registered 135 miles. It's almost exactly 1/3 the actual miles. I reset the trip meter and did a test drive along side of some friends. I registered a fraction of the miles they registered. MPH is accurate. I have every reason to believe the person I bought it from was on the up and up, but I would think he would have had to have noticed the problem. How could he not? The odometer would be telling him he was getting only 120 miles per tank of gas. Before I started my trip home, I was running through the menus and hit reset on the fuel economy feature, or so I thought. Did I unknowingly change something? That couldn't possibly impact the odometer reading itself. Is there a known issue with these?
Is the true mileage stored in more than one place? Could a dealer use a diagnostic tool to read it correctly. Perhaps it's the cluster that's the problem? I also have a G35 where cluster failure is a major known issue. I see from an earlier post that there are numerous possible points of failure.
