Oil Color

I have a 2008 G37S with 147000 miles on it. I recently took it to the shop I normally go to for service to get an oil and filter change. After I took it home I checked the oil and it wasn't as clear as I expected it to be. They used a 5W-30 blend (not synthetic), as they normally do. On my other vehicles, after oil changes, the oil is so clear, you can barely see it on the dip stick. I did talk to the shop and he asked that I send him a pic which I did. His reply was that it appeared normal, but conceded that it appeared a little darker than he would have expected. He offered to change it again to see if it didn't lighten.

I was wondering what others folks experience has been after getting an oil change. Is the oil so clear you can barely see it or I am making a big deal out of nothing?

Appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks

Just had my oil changed last week at Nissan. They use Mobil 5W30 (conventional). I took a pic but you can barely make out the level... ('08 w/111k miles):

If your oil is dark, I would have the shop change the oil again and then check it immediately thereafter.

Thanks for sharing your results. Mine looks similar to yours accept its darker to the left of the dot next to the L and to the right. The portion from the L to H is clear.

This is after the 2nd change? It looks a little dark but that could be due to several factors: brand, different blends/additives, etc. Overall I think you're fine.

I'd say if in doubt, do the oil changes yourself. They are very simple on this vehicle requiring just basic tools (in addition to a floor jack and ramps/jackstands).

It's possible the shop didn't fully drain the previous oil, so mix between old/new caused the slight discoloration of the new. Maybe shop changed suppliers and new oil just isn't as clear as before.

Thanks All. Short of doing it myself, in the future I’ll ask the shop to let the old oil drain completely before reinserting the plug and filling with new oil.
