Can I use struts from a different car?

Can I use struts from a different car?
Theoretically speaking, could I use struts made for a different car as long as it bolts up? Looking at the struts, it is a lot simpler than I had imagined.

Considering each strut has a specific length, travel, and tuning for a specific weight of a chassis this is not a great idea.
