Can you change the speedometer without changing the mileage?
Hello everyone
I live in the gulf and I saw a very clean american g37 and I really wanna buy it, the only problem tho is that american cars have a speedometer in miles/hour and here in the gulf we are more used to km/h. So I was thinking, is it possible to change the speedometer without changing the odometer? Because later on when I decide to sell the car and someone sees that its north american specs with a km/h speedometer they will directly think that I changed the odometer to make the car look as if it drove a lower mileage. So is it possible to change the speedometer without affecting the odometer? Also, is the mileage connected to the screen where the speedometer/odometer are located or is it connected to the car's computer?
thank you

Is this car for sale already in the UAE or are you planning on importing the car?
1) American/US-Spec speedometers show both MPH and KPH. It is not the easiest to see, but the markings are there. The odometer will only read miles.
2) You can physically swap the clusters if you are that concerned about the issue. That is the easy part. But, the mileage will be different, and that is where it gets tricky.
3) Mileage is stored on a chip inside the cluster. If you replace the cluster and want the mileage to match, you will have to send your "new" cluster to a shop that offers the reprogramming service. This service may or may not be available to you in the UAE. Depending on the laws in your land, you may not be able to change the mileage without a lot of legal hassle.
From various research, it has been suggested that the little LCD/Dot Matrix screen (between the two gauges) can be swapped over which would keep the odometer reading the same. I do not if this true and can tell you that getting to that little screen is no easy task.
None of this takes into account one thing: cost. First, you have to find the teplacement cluster, ship it out to get it reprogrammed (unless available locally), and finally, installed into your car. In my opinion it would not be worth it but only you can decide what you want to do with your car.

The US model does have markings for both, but yeah the odometer will be in miles.
Also, I HIGHLY doubt swapping the LCD will swap the mileage. it's likely stored on the PCB of the cluster itself.
