Keep old transmission or buy used?
I posted in a thread two weeks ago stating that my car was having issues when coming to a stop then accelerating. The car would pause for a second then jerk forward. This did not always happen, but often enough that I felt it was a problem. The car has been in the shop two weeks now. They changed the transmission fluid and said the fluid was black. The tech said that I need a new transmission... Since the car is under warranty with my dealer, the costs will be covered by them, but they are quoting out a used or possibly re manufactured transmission. I feel a bit worried about this, as the car drives great other then that jerking issue and if a used transmission is put it, it may have more problems then my current one. I've told them several times to try cleaning the TB's and grounding them, but they don't want to listen to me.. I've owned this car 3 weeks and 2 of these weeks it's been in the shop.. Is getting a used transmission a good idea, or is it a waste of time? Any advise? Thank you for reading.
Wanted to mention this is a 2013 G37X with 88k miles. Trans fluid was probably never changed, was black as can be. This is being done at a non Infiniti mechanic. The closest Infiniti dealer is around 75 miles so if this just needs to be reprogrammed, should I pull the car and not let them replace the trans?

Transmission
I dont think the throttle bodies would cause your car to jerk like that I think its definitely transmission related and I would not worry about it being used especially if it is remanufactured as long as you change the fluid in the new one regularly you should be ok
Keep the old transmission, get it built by Level 10, Turbo charge. The universe is making it obvious.
Nothing wrong with a re-manufactured transmission. It's basically brand-new since they'd open it up and refurbish everything.

Well, it's up to the stealership on what they decide since it's under their warranty. What if they buy a used, non re-manufactured? Am I screwed then?
What does the warranty specifically state? Does it state the replacement unit will be new, used or refurbished? I wouldn't say you're screwed. I have 80k miles on my transmission and it behaves the same today as it did the day I got it.

That is reassuring. The warranty does not mention anything like that. Just says that the trans is covered under warranty. Guess we will see what happens.
"Used" can mean almost anything. I would not consider a used component to be an acceptable warranty fix, but the dealer may argue otherwise. A competent rebuild should be about as good as new in my opinion.
Well, just got off the phone with the dealer and they are looking for a re-manufactured or used that will come with a 1 year warranty. Afterwards my standard warranty will cover for the next 3 years. So should be good either way, hopefully.
I would prefer the reman over a used, but you may not get that option without a fight. Although, I am assuming that the reman will be done competently and that would be hard to know as well. So is a shoddy reman better than a slightly used OEM unit? Oh boy, now I don't think I know what to advise at all. As you said, with the warranty you will have you are probably good. Its a bit of a roll of the dice I would say.
It seems to make sense to go under warranty. Like the other member warned, make sure you know what exactly the warranty covers. If by pull the car you mean tow, see if towing is covered by the warranty or your insurance coverage. Used vs. re-manufactured, re-manufactured or rebuilt usually means the worn parts were replaced so the tranny is useable again. consider rebuilt only if very reputable transmission shop did the rebuild. Check BBB, etc. Get the info on the rebuild from the dealer proposing. Used means considering the mileage on the used unit and not knowing how the prior owner used or abused. Warranty after the work is really important. Either way, if the the transmission is redone, the transmission computer should be checked for proper function before they deliver the car back to you.
The last and only time I faced this was with a different car, Infiniti G20. It had about 90,000 miles. It was out of pocket. The cost was the same either way. I looked into and visited a highly reputable transmission shop and had them rebuild but replace open differential with limited slip. The AWD auto in the G37x is much more complex, but if the transmission shop has experience and good results with it specifically, worth a serious consideration.
