Transmission Issues on 2009 G37X Sedan-To Buy or Not to Buy
I love the look and feel of the G37x and put a deposit down on a 2009. The car came off of a lease: Moonlight; 24,000 miles; automatic; navig. I am FREAKING out because I am afraid the transmission is bad. Yes, I have read the posts, but am not familar with all this new car jargon (have a 2000 Olds Alero). I test drove the car for 20 minutes and did notice a giant JERK when coasting down the hill. Even used, this car is not inexpensive (to me). How do I know if the transmission has this issue? I plan to test drive the car again and show the salesperson some of the posts re the 7AT. I will ask if I can take the car home for a few days. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I don't want to have a car payment for a vehicle that (from what I have read on Edmund's) can lag so much it is dangerous. Thanks so much. Karen, Windsor, CT

Should still be under warranty ..... there is a reprogram for the 7AT, not sure if it's for the 2009 though. The transmission is not "bad" it just needs a reprogram to shift differently ..... go for it.

Good point brandisher. Test drive some new ones so you know what normal shifting is because the 7 speeds in these do shift a little funny but shouldn't be anything to abrupt like you described. Another thing, I really wouldnt worry about the transmission with it still bein under factory warranty. They'll replace the entire unit until its right.

hey bgrman,
As others mentioned the transmission more than likely is fine but the car needs some software updates to reprogram the shifting. There are two and they have been extended to the '09s (I have an '09 coupe), ITB10-075 and ITB12-027A (the A in 027A extends to '09s). Based on forum posts folks see most improvement after the second update (027) gets applied. 2012s should have the updates applied factory so use that as a comparison.
Note that there are two updates and your dealer many only apply the first if they don't have a consult 3+ cable, described here:

Thanks everyone. I feel better knowing there is a solution. Tomorrow night I go to the dealer after work and will test drive again. Then I will ask to test drive a new car. I am kind of haggling with them on the price; they do not seem to want to budge much. I am going to bring a print out of the solutions. Will be very interesting.

Followup on Purchase of 2009 g37x (coupe). Well, dealer agreed to lower price a little (went back & forth for a few days. For the same price, but 9,000 more miles on the car, they are offering me a 2011 g37x because their service dept said there was nothing wrong with the transmission on the 2009. Will I have same issue with the 2011? I am going to test drive the 2011; if it has issues are the TSB's the same. Should I look for anything else in the 2011? Thanks so much.

Bgrman, if you're unhappy with the characteristics of the 7AT then go with the 6MT. That has it's own set of issues (failing CSC seems to be common), but is for the most part bullet proof, and you get to control any and all gear changes. The CSC failures are covered under regular 4yr/60K, or the infiniti extended warranty. It's a crapshoot to get coverage under the powertrain warranty though.

2009 G-37S automatic
I have driven my 2009 37S over 20,000 miles in the 18 months since buying used. No transmission issues with 36,000 miles total on car. Best driving car I've ever owned.
