Car Totaled?

Guy just nailed the side of my car taking it to the shop tomorrow through his insurance, do you guys think it will be totaled or fixable?
His car had barely any damage but he destroyed my rear quarter panel.

What year? I'd say likely totaled.

It’s a 2010 Journey. I kinda hope it is a total loss so I can get a Black or white Manual G37s. So ****ty I just had the GTR rims installed like 2 weeks ago and they got scratched. Luckily they said they would cover the damages to them just need to find a price from Nissan.

That rear quarter will have to cut out along with repair to door, replacing lower rocker, and painting pretty much the whole driver side. They will also have to take out rear glass to paint correctly. Eyeball estimate your at like 7-8k at least

Sorry to see that, tough place to hit regarding repairs
G/L with the insurance, hope the ordeal isn't too prolonged. Let us know how it goes.
FWIW lived in Santa Rosa (close to Coddingtown Mall) many years ago, loved that area, and so tough to see what you all went through last year. Hang in there!

This is my damage on my 2011 G37S Sedan and the total repair bill was around ~$7800. The vehicle was not totaled. I also think it was not totaled because the original estimate was ~$5,000, but about $2800 was added on as supplement and I'm assuming since we were so far into the repair, they chose not to salvage it.

Main parts that were replaced was (off top of the head, not everything listed):
Front Left Fender
Front bumper cover
Left Headlight
Repainted Rear Bumper (out of love)
Repainted hood
And a bunch of misc stuff such as internal parts relating to my engine.]

Also, as you can see, my hood was pushed to the left a little bit resulting in having to use a machine to realign it. Also, the left fender was pushed in that I couldn't open my door at the time. No airbags were deployed.

Overall, your damage seems a little worse so therefore, it might be salvaged.

So I got the first estimate and it was at $5700. I think it seems a little low from what I've seen online and been told but they said its just the beginning estimate and there could be more damage under that cant be seen until they start working on it
Anyone done the whole diminished value thing in California before?

It's not unheard of for body shops to pull things like that to get the work since they know if they told the insurance company $7800 up front it would have been totaled and they wouldn't get the job.

That damage doesn't look bad to me. I mean, it looks bad to the casual observer, but it's not critical damage. Highly unlikely anything important was damaged, it's just a big empty area there covered by a big piece of sheet metal.

Only issues I would be concerned about: future rust, if the repair isn't done perfectly, these areas can rust very badly shortly after repair. All welded areas need to be perfectly rust proofed, especially where exposed to water and salt. Also, paint matching and quality is important.

If the repair costs more than 40-45% of the value of the car they generally will total it
Dont forget to file pip with their insurance

Did the airbags deploy? When you talk to the insurance company you could always pull the "I don't feel safe in the car anymore" to push them towards totaling it. It worked for me a long time ago but then again there was frame damage so they may have totaled it anyway. What sucks is you probably wouldn't get what the car is worth. I assume it's the other guy's fault and if so you could go after his insurance company as well even without a lawyer (not worth getting one).

Source: My wife used to work for an insurance company dealing/fighting with other insurance companies and lawyers. She would be the one to determine liability and how much you would get for your car plus any injury compensation.

Good luck!

In California, it's more like 70-75%. 45% is too low to salvage a car. If that's the case, the initial 5000$ estimate should total his car since our car is worth 9-13k.
