what other cars did you guys look at before getting your G?
I looked at Maserati Gran Turismos. As well as 996TT's, and Cayman S's. Even looked at LS1 swapped RX7's. Finally pulled the trigger on a G37S because:
Maserati Gran Turismo - It's awesome, but I feel like it's too niche, and that would bite me in the *** later. Things like finding parts as the car gets older... there are already very few cars on the road now, what about in 5 years? While the parts will still be obtainable, they won't be cheap or easily available, I suspect. Also, while I have no problem DD'ing a super prestige car, I'd be worried about parking it on the street in certain parts of the city. I don't consider myself as 'better' than anyone else because of the car I drive, but I worry that others might see the car parked there, and think that was the case, and vandalize it in some way or another.
996TT - Bulletproof engine, and they go like nobody's business. Yes, they're that good. And their values are also about to shoot through the roof, but I got less excited when I thought about spending that kind of money on a 10+ year old 'modern' car. I worry about aging, German wiring. And chasing down wiring problems is the WORST!
Cayman S - The perfect car, but I had the feeling that the power would get to me in time. So I started looking at the availability to increase the power in the future. Not many options that I would trust. So I was worried that I would want to trade up to a Turbo, which is a big reason why there are a lot of lightly used Caymans out there. Also, only 2 seats.
LS Swapped RX7 - It's a beautiful car. And LS motors are bulletproof, and get great gas mileage in RX7's. It's just too old of a car, same as my issue with a 996TT. And it would either be me buying someone else's project, or my project. We all know that project cars get corners cut, no matter what people say.
I eventually started going down the rabbit hole of looking at one car, and then another, and then another... In the tech world, that's called scope creep. All of a sudden I was looking at cars that were utterly impractical. And then to offset that, I was looking at a beater to go along with it. Then I would inevitably snap back to a Cayman S. But then I was reminded of the few things I didn't like about them. Then a G37 came up for sale relatively close to me, and I pulled the trigger because I can park it wherever I want, it's a GREAT looking car, a little boring, but all the lines and proportions are there, it has 4 seats, and the aftermarket is as healthy as the Z's, with replacement or upgraded parts available everywhere from Rock Auto to any tuner shop. AND there is a supercharger available that is CARB legal and they offer a warranty. It checked all the boxes!

Didn't realize my little barb about Toyota/Lexus would create such a kerfuffle.
For me personally I didn't want a cookie cutter car. Practically every other car on the road is either a Toyota, a BMW, or as of late a Hyundai. They are 10¢ a dozen. I wanted something less mainstream but equally as classy, sporty, stylish, and refined. I wanted a car that wasn't in every other driveway in every other subdivision on every other street, etc....
I'm sure Toyota makes a good product but I will never buy or even consider looking at one. If that makes me a biased a$$, well, I'm happy with that.
Edit: I will make one exception. If Toyota were to bring back the Supra WITH the sequential twin turbo I-6 (inline 6) only then I would consider looking at it. Doubtful they will as they're trying to push this Scion/Subaru model. And yes, I know the Supra shared parts with the Lexus SC300/400.

I really wanted a 335 but a part of me wanted to stay away from the German problems. I strongly considered an ISF for a while but in the end I saw the G37S as the best bang for my buck. Went with it and couldn't be happier! I really love my car.
3.8 Genesis coupe
370Z
2006 M3
2012 Mustang GT
The Genesis is a cheap copy of the G, and doesn't drive nearly as well. The 370Z is just too damn small for me to DD, it makes my G37 feel huge inside in comparison.(besides, the wife bought one so I get to play with it) Parts for the M3 are ridiculously expensive, and the Mustang is after all a Ford. I actually went to the dealership to look at the GT and left with my G37 instead, and I've never regretted buying it.

To answer your question though, before I was looking at my G37.... I was looking at G35's

True story, I didn't know anything about them I went to ask the difference between the 35 and 37 thinking they were just different models being produced yearly lol. Either way fell in love with 37
I just about gave up on G37, because I wanted a super low miles Lapis blue with beige interior and all the options except the electronics package. Rarer than rare, even nationwide. So when the exact G37 (and I mean EXACT) that I wanted popped up at a dealership 3 miles from my office, I figured it was God's gift and pulled the trigger
Audi A5- but expensive, and hard to find
I liked the G37 because it looks classy but sporty at the same time. I also thought modding this car would be crazy fun over the Audi. But that's my $.02

Myself, it came down between The G37S Convertible and the BMW 335i Convertible. The BMW and Infiniti dealerships were next to each other. I was able to drive the 2 cars back to back over the same roads. The G37s was every bit as good as the 335i. In addition similarly equipped the G37 was $10K cheaper. Plus, the G37 is a better looking car with a much better exhaust note.
